strept B
Does anyone know of any babies born with this. My mom knows of someone who just had a baby born with it that is currently septic & on a respirator. Do doctors usually check for this prior to birth.

Re: strept B
They usually give the mom a blood test before birth to make sure they don't have this since its pretty common.

Re: strept B
You usually get tested for this between 35-36wks. It is a vaginal swab and if you test positive you get treated with antibiotics before you deliver so you don't pass it on to the baby.

Re: strept B
When I was pregnant with Emma they never gave me the Strep B test... I did get it with Jeremy though. Its just a swab. Poor baby!

Re: strept B
a strep b culture should be done on the mother somewhere around 36 weeks or so, my office actually does it twice, once @ 30 weeks and once @ 36 weeks. apparently we can test positive for it and not even know we have it. I was negative but if you do test positive I believe all they do is give you antibiotics in the IV at the time of birth. that is really sad about the baby

Re: strept B
i have it, it was picked up in my urine at 13 weeks - which means that i have large amounts in me because usually it will not show up in urine samples.
i have to get to the hospital as soon as my water breaks because i need to get at least two large doses of penicillan at four hours apart prior to the baby coming down the brith canal.
i have to hope for a slow delivery so there is enough time to administer the antibiotics....i am VERY nervous sbout the whole thing.....
is that baby going to be ok?
