Straw cup users - please come in - biting the tip off the straw

So Jack uses the Munchkin straw sippy cups.

Tonight he bite off the top of the straw. This is the third time he did it. Lucilkly I have caught it everytime.

Should I be writing to someone about this - should this be some sort of recall?

Do all of the plastic straws eventually get bitten off?

I'm not sure what to do - I think I will swich cups - but all the other ones I've found leak. I'm thinking it's much better to clean up a leaky cup then have to worry about my son choking on his straw.

Lily's been using those cups for months now and she's never bitten the tip off! Your little guy must have strong teeth!!!

I'd switch....even if they leak!Chat Icon

Yikes. Chat Icon That's not good (duh).
DD drinks from all different types of straws and I can't see this happening to any of them, but I guess you never know.

my son has always done this. i think they will do it to any brand, not just munchkin. which is what we use too. my son is just one of those kids who likes to chew on plastic. he still does it and he's almost 6.

Re: Straw cup users - please come in - biting the tip off the straw

my 3yr does this however his speech teacher feels it's because his mouth muscles aren't strong enough to hold with just his lips so he uses his teeth which wind up taking the top of the straw off. I know I have a diff situation but what I found to work for us is the cups (like the toss n go but you can reuse them also) with the lid that have a little whole for straws. I don't use the straws that came with it because he chewed them too so I but plastic straws (you can get like 200 for a $1 at the $ store) and then after every use I just throw them away.

there was a show on (Oprah, I think ) my MIL told me.......it was how dangerous palstic straws are because small pcs can get stuck in the digestive tract......skin will form around it if it is a small enough pc and children can get a terrible infection because their body is trying to fight this foreign object that is now lodged in their body!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon She would freak out if she saw my son with that cup you describ, because he used to do the same thingChat Icon

no - they aren't take and toss.

I'll make a run to BRU tomorrow and do my own trial to see which ones leak and which don't.

I do want to stick to him using a straw though for the speech reasons.

My DS does that too. I use the playtex straw cups... The straw is made of hard plastic so they can't bite through.

Re: Straw cup users - please come in - biting the tip off the straw

My DD chews on all of her cups and has bitten a few of the straws apart as well. She does it out of boredom like how we chew gum. When she wakes up and hangs out in her crib or if she finds a pacifier laying around she'll use it and puts it in sideways in the side and chews on that too and has broken many of those. I'm thinking she's too old to even use one if she's doing this but am afraid to take them away so I just keep replacing them.Chat Icon

Re: Straw cup users - please come in - biting the tip off the straw

Both DC chewed on all straws, and DD still does. Doesn't matter the brand, material, size, etc. She bites on all straws. Even adult drinking straws.

Until they come up with metal straws, we just keep trying to get her to stop.... Chat Icon

Re: Straw cup users - please come in - biting the tip off the straw

I used to use the Munchin ones, but my boys would bite the straw too. I switched to Playex, the straw is harder, so now they dont bite them anymore.
