Can it burn a CD? Thats all you need it to be able to do.

Re: Storing Digital Pictures
If you have windows XP and a CD drive you should be able to do it.
If you open up your pictures using "my computer" there is will be a space on the left of the window that says "picture tasks." That will give you the option to save or copy your pictures to a CD.

Re: Storing Digital Pictures
I have thousands of pictures so I try to have multiple copies on multiple forms of media, just in case one fails.
I have them on my website's server, DVD's, computer hard drive and an external USB hard drive. I also have photo boxes full of pictures from before we went digital.
Just keep in mind, CD's & DVD's can be ruined by things like heat, scratches and cracks.
My external USB hard drive is 180 gigabytes and cost about $200. when we bought it years ago. We also use it to back up all our important computer files & music.
Plus, you can bring it with you to other computers and just plug it in if you want to share things with other people.
If you want to burn a CD, you have to have a CD burner - not just a CD-ROM. Check the front of it, it probably says if it's a CD-RW (rewritable - burner).
Good luck!
edited to add:
By the way, the reason why I'm nuts about the safeguarding of the pictures is because I'm the family archivist if you will - I'm the only one who always brings my camera to every event. And I reprint them & enlarge them for my family too.

Re: Storing Digital Pictures
Hard drive on work PC, external hard drive at work, hard drive on laptop, hard drive on home PC, external hard drive at home..... What can I say, I'm paranoid.... *every* hard drive will eventually fail. Luckily, most hard drives would fail years after we're done using them, but there is still a chance. Also, by having them in two sites, if there is a fire or flood at either work or home, the other copies are safe.
FYI, CDs and DVDs have a limited life span. Depending on the brand, they range from 20 to 100 years, but then again, after 20 years, who is still going to have a CD or DVD player? As long as you transfer things to a newer format (VHS tapes to DVD, or reel-to-reel movies to VHS, etc), you should be good for a very long time.

Re: Storing Digital Pictures
Another question....i saved the pics to a CD.
Do you ever replace the memory card in your camera or do you delete the pictures off of it if you have saved the pictures to a CD?

I delete the pics from my memory card once I have saved the pictures onto another medium.

I delete them from my memory card once they are saved. And like Goldenrod said, we are thinking of purchasing another hard drive and storing on them, too.

I had heard this too - that the CD's / DVD's deteriorate over time, some in a shorter timespan than mentioned above. I was also told not to use a sharpee marker on them as the chemicals can migrate into the plastic, compromising the pictures. Supposedly the gold discs are better, but I think they were referring to a specific gold photo-archival type, not just the color.
I back mine up to an external drive periodically that I keep offsite, and I'm considering getting a second one so I can more easily transfer them to a second drive with more frequency, and rotate them offsite for safety.
The funny thing is, when all we had were hard copies with a negative, we were never this concerned about photo safety - they usually all got dumped together into an old box that was stored in less than optimum conditions, subject to house fires, dampness, etc.

I also heard about "laser rot" just before I posted, so I did a little research before I started spreading rumors. Current CDs and DVDs don't really fall vicitm to the premature aging. LaserDiscs did, and I think some of the original CDs, especially the cheap ones.
Markers definitely can destroy a CD/DVD. Sharpies are OK. I've been using them for years. I used a felt-tipped marker on one CD, and a few weeks later, I could actually read what I wrote.... from the *other* side of the CD! The ink just dissolved all of the CD ink or something. The plastic was still intact, but the ink was destroyed, so that CD was useless.
You're right about how we used to treat photos. I've admitted how paranoid and anal I am about my digital photos, but I have shoeboxes full of film and film-based photos that I have not scanned, and am not protecting at all...
