StonyBrook Midwives first appt
Hi Girls,
This is my first post to this board :) We're almost 5 weeks along and my first midwife appointment is next week. Can anyone who's been there let me know what goes on at the first appointment? I'd like my husband to come if they're going to do a sonogram, but didn't want him to come for no reason. Thanks so much and I'm so excited to be here :)

I am a BTDT mom who uses the midwives but I don't have much insight since I didn't use them for my first appt. They are amazing though you went to the right place!

Re: StonyBrook Midwives first appt
Thanks so much :) My regular GYN is there, but he's not taking OB patients anymore, so he recommended that I go to them. I'd just feel bad having my husband come with the expectation of a sonogram, and then there isn't one. Thanks for the good recommendation :)

Re: StonyBrook Midwives first appt
I went to them before switching dr's. They do not do a sono at the first appointment. The first sono is actually at 20 weeks, unless you decide to do the 12 week NT scan.

If you are used to Dr's this is nothing like that they are very very hands off and that may bother you. I never did the NT scan and only got one internal done but bring DH because he may be able to hear the heart beat !

Yes. I was going to say that also. I left the practice because they were too hands off for me.. but I know many people look for that kind of experience. I really liked the midwife I met with but I just needed more hands on experience espcially because I was having severe cramping in the beggining of my pregnancy and scared.

Re: StonyBrook Midwives first appt
I am used to my regular GYN, who always takes a lot of time with me. See, I didn't think I'd be able to see/hear the hearbeat so early, and the lady on the phone when I made the appt was so vague, LOL. They mentioned something about a scan at 11-12 weeks, to check for Downs, is that the same thing? I'm still trying to process everything, but you've really been a big help

Re: StonyBrook Midwives first appt
i go to that practice but i dont see the midwives (im a high risk pt they wont see me) but i heard nothing but great things about them.
they prob wont do a sono if ur about 6 weeks along. If they are going to do a sono they schedule it along with ur other appt (they give u 2 appointments) they usually wait till ur about 8 weeks.
congratulations!!

Thanks!! I'm so excited, but having a hard time keeping quiet for the moment. We're waiting to tell our immediate family until after the appointment. They'll never believe that I kept quiet for so long, LOL. Thanks for the sono information, that's good to know. I've heard great things about them, so I'm excited for the new experience.

Re: StonyBrook Midwives first appt
Yes, my appointment is with Careen next week. Good to know, thank you :) I'm hoping to meet all of them, or at least most of them, so that way, I'll be comfortable when the time comes with whoever is there when I have the baby.

Hmm, I don't want someone to be too hands off, it's our first and I'm a naturally nervous person, LOL. I guess worst case, I could switch to one of the OB's there?

Re: StonyBrook Midwives first appt
I LOVE THE SB MIDWIVES!!!
I was with my OB GYN when I was prego wth my first son, and I switched to the midwives around 25 weeks I think, because I wasn't so crazy about my dr and I want hoping to have a more natural birth (and wasn't sure my dr would be supportive with that).
I am now prego with #2. For my first appt with teh midwives, I think I remember they just asked me a ton of questions and filled out some paper work. I am not sure they could hear the heartbeat that early... but I'm having trouble remembering.
With my first DS, I had the one sonogram at 20 weeks. The midwives didn't do any other sonograms, and I never had any internals until I was in labor. I liked it that way, but I know - as other posters have said - some people aren't comfortable with the "hands off" approach.
I haven't met all the midwives - but so far I LOVE Goldie, Marie, Careen, Ann. Most of my appts have been with Goldie and Marie. Ann delivered my son. Careen was in the hospital the day after my son was born and was WONDERFUL!!!
I can't rave about them enough.
Good luck with everything!!!!!!!!!! and congratulations!!!!!

Thank you so much for the information and encouragement, you put my mind at ease a little, since I was going crazy all last night trying to decide if I made the right decision. I just would like some proof, other than my OTC preg test that I'm actually pregnant, LOL. I guess I'm just nervous, since we're going to tell our immediate family after the appt and I would have loved a sono picture to show them Thank you again for your experience, you did ease my mind
