Stomach virus questions-- after the virus is gone? LONG
Ugh, we're still suffering over here.
DD's stomach virus hit Tuesday night...lots of vomiting overnight. The next day she got sick a few times, but mostly just the water she'd consumed. Now, since then (Thursday on), she's acted completely normal all day (besides for serious lack of appetite) and night, but has gotten sick 1-2 times in her sleep, almost always 2-3 hours after she goes into bed.
Is this still normal?? It has happened every single night since then-- so last night was the 5th night in a row of vomiting. No fever, playing the same during the day, etc.
Her eating is severely down, I mean she could go all day with eating just a few crackers and that's it...but she's still playing like normal, etc. She's taking really long naps (3-4 hours), we're assuming b/c she doesn't have much energy b/c of lack of food, but she doesn't get sick during the nap, even after 4 hours But yet she's in her crib for 2 hours at night and she gets sick...she's not even having an official "dinner" b/c she won't eat.
She does still have a congested cough maybe 5x/day, but she's not coughing overnight thus making her throw up. The throwing up comes completely out of nowhere. Her mattress is still elevated and she is sleeping on the elevated part.
We are so confused about the vomiting...I'm actually a little worried
So, thanks for reading this far If your child has had the stomach virus:
- how many days did they vomit for? - how long until their appetite took an upswing? I mean, I know it can take a while to get back to normal, but she'd be happy not eating all day long.

Re: Stomach virus questions-- after the virus is gone? LONG
Mads first got sick on a Thursday at about 4pm. She threw up every 20 minutes until about 11pm. Then she was able to keep teaspoons of Pedialyte down for about an hour before they'd come up. This went on until about 3am. Then she was able to keep the Pedialyte down.
She finally fell asleep at 6am on Friday and slept til 10am. We gave her NOTHING but Pedialyte until that afternoon. She was BEGGING for crackers (she loves Saltines-go figure). So, she ate crackers and Pedialyte for the rest of the day.
No vomiting all day Friday.
On Saturday, she seemed fine so I let her drink her soymilk and offered her waffles. She barely ate but drank some. It all came up about 4 hours later.
Back to Pedialyte and crackers. She didn't really want the crackers, but drank the Pedialyte. It all came up again at 3pm. She was acting sick again and asking to go to bed at 5pm.
Sunday morning she was totally fine. I only gave her water and Pedialyte and crackers or toast. Then we tried bananas. By dinnertime she was eating waffles and drinking her milk.
That was the end of it. She didn't really get her real appetite back for another day or two, but we didn;t see anymore vomitting after 3pm Sunday.

BTW- the pediatrician assured me that they can go a few days with barely eating. As long as they are getting enough fluids to have wet diapers, then they are safe.
Madelyn lost about a pound after it was all said and done. My husband got the same virus and lost almost 15 pounds. He just did NOT want to eat- and he had no vomitting.
Eliza and I got the virus and I had 1 night of sheer hell, but was wanting to eat by the next night. Eliza threw up every few minutes for about 6 hours but was FINE later that day. She never lost her appetite, the little pig.
Hope she's feeling better soon!

My neice is 19 months and had it.. she threw up badly the first day, then had 1-3 more incidents of random vomiting over the next 4 days. it's a weird virus that's affecting everyone differently

Oh no!! I have no idea about the stomach virus, but maybe take her to PM Pediatrics today? I'd get her checked out just in case. Hope you're ALL feeling better soon!!!

Re: Stomach virus questions-- after the virus is gone? LONG
My DD had the stomach virus when she was like 18 months or so. She threw up once a day after the major bout. It wasn't after she went to bed, it was random times of the the day but I was worried myself. I attributed it to her appetite. She actually got her appetite right back and it was hard to get her to slow down.

If this is what DS and I have - it's the worst! It's neverending.
DS started on Wednesday morning with vomitting. That lasted about 24 hours. But he's also vomitted a few more random times since then. He now has diarrhea. Today is the first day he's eating anything and he's finally drinking and having wet diapers again.
I landed myself in the ER with this one! It wwas much quicker for me - only about 24 hours, but INTENSE. I ended up passing out, hit my head on teh bathroom floor and had what might have been a seizure. AND I'm 9 weeks preggo. FUN.
As a pp said, everyone seems to be reacting so differently to it.
Can't wait till this is OVER!
Hope you're better asap. Hang in there!!!

Re: Stomach virus questions-- after the virus is gone? LONG
She is probably okay, but I would call your doctor or go to PM Pediatrics to see if everything is fine. DS had adenovirus which started with vomiting Wednesday before last. He vomited some more that Friday, which was also when he got a stuffy nose, cough, and pinkeye. But that was it for the vomiting, though honestly he ate and drank very little. I was mostly worried about the lack of drinking.
He still isn't eating normally, and his fluid intake is still down a week and a half later, though today was the first day he drank close to his normal amount (without being coaxed also).
Will she take popsicles, sorbet, jello, or broth? DS would not, but they are also good sources of fluids. Or applesauce or mild babyfood purees.

If she is vomiting in her sleep or at night - I would say since you said she has a cough it sounds like post nasal drip -if she has a pretty empty stomach from not eating that would cause chaos with her tummy (esp if it is sensitive from the stomach bug she had). I have bad allergies and I get pretty nauseated if I don't eat with post nasal drip. Can you try to get some maybe beef broth with rice or noodles or chicken stock with noodles, plain scrambled eggs, banana, carrots or something else like that into her - that might help and it is pretty bland.

Hmm...this makes sense. So there's nothing I can do for the post nasal drip? And you think the relatively-empty belly is the culprit when mixed with the post nasal? So we just have to wait it out and try to feed her?
Funny, we've tried scrambled eggs and bananas (and bland mac & cheese) and nothing is working. But we'll keep trying.
I just feel so badly for her...last night, after vomit #2, she says "mommy, I don't want to get sick anymore"

Mac and cheese might make her sick since the cheese is dairy. I had very bad sinus and allergy problems growing up and I found when I had them if I avoided dairy that would help. I know even now though if I have an empty stomach and have post nasal drip I get sick to my stomach.
Try staying away from all cheese and diary products (milk, yogurt, butter, sour cream, milk, ice cream etc) for a day or two and see if that helps too.
Can you ask your ped if there is anything you can do for it?
I could be wrong but if she has a cough there could be post nasal drip (Kaitlyn coughs in her sleep when her allergies bother her) and I know it bothers her tummy and she eats less. As I said I could be wrong but it would make sense. And if she just got over a stomach bug her tummy might be upset for a while before it completely settles down.
Listen I totally hear you about the getting sick etc. Kaitlyn had a stomach bug for 10 days last year when she was 18 months - she would vomit for a day or two, then diarrhea for a day then vomit again 48 hours later, then back to the other issue. It was horrible. I don't wish that on ANYONE!
I hope she feels better soon!
