Still trying to work the kinks out

So, DH is home with DS during the day and then I am home with him at night. Since DH's schedule is rotating, our family time is limited.

Today, DH heard that he possibily could switch his schedule so that he would work two double shifts in a row one week, then have five days off and then work two double shifts and one single shift the next week and have four days off.

He'd have to stay at his step mother's one night a week, and we'd have to put DS in daycare two days a week, but we would have more family time.

What would you think?

I think that sounds good. It must be hard to just pass each other by each day! Chat Icon

I would do whatever it takes to get more family time. Our best times are when all four of us spend it together on the weekends and at night.

Re: Still trying to work the kinks out

Well, we were in a similar situation where JT originally worked a two week rotation where one week he'd work M, Th, Fri., Sat. and Sun., and the next week he'd just work Tue. and Wed.
So we either needed daycare two day one week or three days the next.
Then he got an offer to work only at night so he could be home all day. We went back and forth a lot about it and a year later, we're both so happy that he took the job to work at night. It really keeps Ava's schedule regular and it meant a lot to us that we didn't have to take Ava out of the house for daycare at the crack of dawn. We also didn't want to deal with someone canceling for being sick if we had a nanny.
It took me a while to get used to our new schedule and it sucks that we only have weekends together, but on the flip side, Ava is NEVER without one of us, and that benefit was so much more important for us right now.

You are right, it is nice that one of us is always with him. But because of DH's rotating schedule, we don't have weekends together. Like this week, we have til DH has to leave for work at 4pm on Sat-Sun and then after 6pm on Monday and Tuesday when I come home from workChat Icon

See, this was the other thing I forgot to mention, when JT switched to the night schedule it was M-F and no holidays. So we always have each other on the weekends and holidays now. Before, I would see him every, other weekend and if his shift fell on Christmas, too bad for us. So that was a big consideration for us. If I was in your situation, I'd do whatever I could to get some more family timeChat Icon

ThanksChat Icon I means a lot that you know what I am getting into.

The FDNY is soo annoying with holidays. You have a platoon and that platoon has off every holiday off for the whole year. DH had that platoon this year, then they switched himChat Icon

Back on topic. DH really misses being home with us at night. And he really wants to do it. Plus, as the weather is getting worse, i don't like that we have DS in the car so much, KWIM?

Re: Still trying to work the kinks out

I'd do whatever I could for more family time. DH works nights & I work days & right now we have maybe 15 minutes together (at 5am when we catch up while I'm pumping & he comes in from work). We do see e/o on the weekends, but its still hard. I mean thankfully one of us is always home w/ baby but its not easy.

This was a big concern for us. I know that it's kind of silly because the weather isn't bad year-round, but we really couldn't see ourselves dragging Ava out at 6am when it was freezing cold in the winter or raining or snowing, etc, and then one of us having to worry about picking her up after work.
Again, you do what you have to in order to get more family time. For us, it actually worked out that we have more quality time together with JT working nights. It was so hard in the beginning, but now, we work like clock work and I actually cherish the time I have to myself at night.
Whatever you guys choose, you will make it workChat Icon
