Stealing stuffed animals

My dog has stolen my DS stuffed animal and chewed it up. I was in his seat, high up and while we were not in the room, she got it and destroyed it. I am so sad because it was his toy.

How to I fix this problem. She gets a 2 hour walk every day, and I play with her ALL the time. Plus she runs in the back yard for an hour or so.

She also nips, which needs to stop, because she is has gone to nip at my son. I know she is just playing, but he is only 4 months old, and I can't have that.

My trainer said to just turn away from her, but that is not really possible. Any other ideas?

Re: Stealing stuffed animals

In order to teach him not to steal the stuffed animals you will probably need to teach him to "leave it". Once he learns to "leave it" then put the animals in places that will entice him and when he goes for it tell him "leave it". Give him a treat when he leaves it. He will understand eventually that those aren't his toys. As for the nipping, we've had the same problem during play except we don't have small children to worry about. I have taught my boy when he starts to get rough to get a toy so that there is something in his mouth. I used to really have to tell him to get it and now if he starts getting to excited he automatically picks one up. A full mouth is a mouth that can't get too mouthy! Hope this all helps! Good luck!

I found that with any dog I had, if they are allowed stuffed animals or soft toys that are their own, they can't always tell the difference between theirs and not theirs.

Re: Stealing stuffed animals

Maybe there is a way to put a distinguishing scent on the toys?
I wouldn't be able to have any stuffed animals anywhere within my dogs' reach. Those kinds of toys are just too irresistible for them.

The scent of the child is very distinguishable to a dog. I think the dog could be taught to stay away from anything that smells like the the child, it will just take some time.

while you're working on things, i would keep the dog away from your kid until he passes the nipping at the kid phase, or your kid is big enough to get away on his own.

i.e. baby gate the dog outside the room you're in if the baby's on the floor
