Starting solids quesitons
Alexa is 4 1/2 months old and her ped. told me I could start her on solids right away and skip cereal. The thing that confuses me is that the told me to start w/peaches and I can't find peaches anywhere. Can I just start with applesauce?

The ped. told you to skip cereal? It's like a staple for babies because it gives them much needed iron. Honestly, I wouldn't skip cereal if it were me, not that you were asking about that, but still, my two cents. As for peaches, Gerber makes them.

I agree, it's strange that the doctor told you to skip it.

Re: Starting solids quesitons
i'm skipping the cereal because grains are not good starter food for babies to digest.

Re: Starting solids quesitons
although my dr. told me to start with cereal - Talia never ate it, ever! I wouldn't worry too much about it. SOme dr's are now saying that the cereals are just empty carbs anyway - either was I am sure you will be just fine.

Re: Starting solids quesitons
I was told to start with cereal. Seems strange that a doctor would say to skip cereal.
Anyways Gerber has peaches and even beechnut does. I've see and bought them...

Re: Starting solids quesitons
thank you for all the "strange" comments, but i am completely 100% comfortable w/not starting her on cereal. from what i have researched, many peds don't recommend starting w/cereal so it's def. not "strange"

Re: Starting solids quesitons
It's actually one of the newer recommendations to start w/fruit instead of cereal because cereal is cereal is loaded with carbs.

Re: Starting solids quesitons
It's not so unusual. I was told by the BFing consultants to skip cereal. They said there's absolutely nothing nutritional that it offers that is necessary. They weren't big fans of jarred food either. They were telling me to start with sweet potatoes and avacado and mashed bananas. But my Drs are more old school and I went with what they said. You can get iron from a vitamin supplement. the cereal only has it b/c it's fortified with it.
ETA Gerber has peaches but if you can't find them anywhere I don't see why you can't start with applesauce. I think that's what most moms start with anyhow. I started with Pears.

Re: Starting solids quesitons
Hey there! My little man came home from Korea eating bananas off a spoon before he ever ate cereal off a spoon (although he was having rice cereal in his bottle for reflux). I think bananas are a good starter. Actually, depending on your baby's poop situation. If your baby has trouble pooping, don't give bananas because they're binding. I think apples are too. If you have no problems in that area, I think any fruit would be a good starter. I personally hate peaches because they smell like vomit and even grosser when they come back up. I don't feed them to my son because I can stomach the smell. You should be able to find the peaches in any supermarket though, along with the other stage 1 fruits. If not, no worries, just go to another fruit. I honestly don't think it matters much which you start with. Just be sure to start with 1 tablespoon on the first try to check for allergies. If no reaction, on day 2, you can feed more. I'm happy you trust your doctor so much. That's so important. Have fun. Take pictures of her first feeding experience and let us know how it goes. I feel sad I never got to see my little man eat off a spoon for the first time....but I did see him eat for the first time and try new foods for the first time, so it was exciting nontheless....but I digress...good lucki!
