starting solids late related to textural issues?

My ped is really trying to convince me to start my twins on solids now. They are 4 months. I told him I'm waiting till 6 months. When I ask him why its better to start now he says bc chewing is not a natural instinct, it takes time to learn it and delaying solids too long could lead to textural issues.

He also said that solids before a year are part of their diet and their milk intake will go down. I though solids before a year were just for "fun".

Has anyone ever heard of this?
(Sidenote I'm definitely switching peds bc we don't see eye to eye and he asked me why don't I trust him)

Did you ask him why the AAP and WHO recommend waiting until 6 months?

This would definitely not fly with me at all! Our ped gave me the ok at 4 months but was fine with me waiting until 6m. It bugged me a little that he even gave the ok and didn't inform me that the current recommendation is 6 even if I knew it anyway.

ETA-DD has no issues with texture, chewing, etc as a result of starting at 6 months.

I'm really pissed for you that he would be pressuring you that way! If I were you and I had the nerve, I'd be emailing him articles to show him his advice is ridiculous!

4 months is very young...it isn't like they're 9 months old and haven't had a solid yet.

I'd go with your mommy instinct on this one!

Our ped just told us that we could start at 4 months if we chose to do so. But I never heard anything about learning to chew! That sounds kind of ridiculous to me. At the end of the day, you are the mom and you make the decisions you think are best for your children.

That's just ridiculous! i think all kids hate solids the first time because of the texture regardless of how old they are!

I actually read something somewhere (online) that said that as babies get older, they actually start chewing and that's one of the ways you can tell that they're ready for solids. So based on that site, chewing *is* instinctual!

I agree with you in switching pediatricians. You need someone you trust.

My ped had us start both kids at 4 months. My DD didn't get eating until 5 months (took her a while to learn how to swallow solid food versus liquids).

The AAP has recommendations... Based on obesity studies. Basically, in formula fed kids, starting food earlier leads to increased obesity. However, starting foods earlier does lead to decreased allergies. My ped thought the allergies issue was more important.

Nonetheless, you need to trust your ped and future advice he or she gives. If you are having problems this early, switch... But nothing is the "right" answer yet concerning feeding.

Re: starting solids late related to textural issues?

What a load of crap! We skipped baby food all together with all 3 of my kids. It's called baby led weaning. I didnt even know it had a name until after my second started solids. I just followed my gut. To me, shoveling food into their mouths just seemed wrong. I felt that when they were ready they would be able to feed themselves. My gut was rightChat Icon I started them on table foods when they were all 7-8 months old. They did fantastic when they were ready(which was different for all 3 kids). They are fantastic, non picky eaters. Solids the first year is just practice. Breastmilk/formula is all they need for the first 12 months. There is no reason to rush it.

starting solids late related to textural issues?

I know nothing about the textural issues.

But I do not beleive solids before 1 year are for fun.

Yes they learn how to eat by havign them but there is PLENTY of nutriional value in the fruits and veggies. And yes as you add in more food the milk does go down and that is natural.

As for the when you should start....I don't see a big difference between 4 and 6 months so go with what you are comfortable with.

I don't think it would effect whether your DC have textural issues. I started both boys at 4 months - one had textural issues still even though I started then.

Every kid is different.

As for CIO - I do know people who have done it before 6 months (one being a pediatrician themselves) and it seemed to cause no harm but, I personally couldn't do it. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Re: starting solids late related to textural issues?

My older DS was a big baby. He got his first teeth at 4months. He would eyeball us eating our food, and start chewing motions. He was ready!! At 5 months, he had baby cereal, loved oatmeal. He pretty much had mashed up table foods. He never once gagged or spit out food, even his first try. He grabbed the spoon and fed himself!Chat Icon

He is an awesome eater (5 now).

My second son was different. He didn't show signs until 6 months. So he started then, with oatmeal. He also loved table foods, never gagged or spat anything out.

Every baby would survive and thrive with only breastmilk/formula the first year, in fact they do in other countries. Breastmilk/formula has far more calories and nutrients then a few tablespoons of baby foods have. Lessening then amount of breastmilk/formula for solids actually cuts back the amount of calories/nutrients baby receives. You are suppose to feed solids after breastmilk/formula for that exact reason. Obviously the closer they get to 12 months the more natural it is to start cutting back on milk and make the switch to solids. But every baby would survive on breastmilk/formula alone the first year(unless they have rare conditions that effect this).

I never said they can't survive and thrive on BM/Formula alone. but to say that baby food (including homemade) has no nurtional value is wrong. And from your previous post you started table food at 8 months so clearly you believe in feeding your baby food before a year.

All I said was that it isn't all about learning to eat. A bananna is a bananna whether it is give to them mashed up at 5 months or eaten whole at 11 months so there is nutrional value to the "food" we give them before a year. And as the amount of food increases you do see a drop in formula....DS never drastically dropped but He went from 28-30 ounces a day to 22-24 by the time we were on 3 meals a day.

Once again this isn't a one size fits all. You have to do what you feel is best for your babies and I did what was best for mine. He clearly was not hurt by my feeding him baby food at four months since he is 15 months and perfectly healthy and a great eater.

I know it wasnt directed towards me but I completely agree with this, and I'm not knocking anyone who starts earlier. I couldnt care less what others do with their kids- it doesnt affect me. (as a side note, I'm glad to hear your roving sleeper is a great eaterChat Icon )

No it wasn't directed at you. Well kind of. I just think that there tends to be TONS of opinions and as moms we want to do the "right" thing for our babies. And truthfully there are so many "right" things. THats why I always say do what is right for you.....so take all this and read it and then int he end form your own opinion.

And yes he is a great eater and sleeper!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

And thank god he is a great eater cause he has my DH's metabolism and is a sting bean!!!!

Re: starting solids late related to textural issues?

I started solids at 4 months, but if I have another DC, I might start later. We were eager to start because she was not a great drinker, and we wanted to get more into her. In retrospect, she was not ready, because when we took her to a feeding therapist 3 months later, she still had a tongue thrust reflex that should have gone away, and because we had been feeding her before that went away, she had all kinds of negative practice eating incorrectly (and that explained why she was such a messy eater).

Interestingly, the feeding therapist was more concerned with us getting the food into DD than the bottles, but she explained it was because the formula was synthetic nutrients when the fruits and veggies were natural. Her pediatrician and GI were more concerned about increasing her formula intake. That just goes to show you that among professionals, there is always going to be a difference of opinions, and there is no one right answer. You should do what feels best for you as a mommy, and definitely find a pediatrician who are comfortable with and with whom you can have an intelligent conversation.

I'm sorry that youve been going through so much. It's interesting, yet I'm not surprised that they have such differing opinions. I can see both sides of it. On one hand I'm looking forward to the day I can give them solids but while I'm still able to breastfeed (even though I have to supplement), I think it's important to give them that.

Yes, I started feeding them table foods at 7-8 months. But that was only for fun, not nutrition. They got their nutrition and calories from breast milk alone. The few random bites of solids they had here and there played no part in keeping them alive. I could have skipped it and it would have had no change on their weight. That's how little they received. They would sometimes go weeks without a bite of solids. I never fed it to replace the breast milk. Before a year it isn't needed at all, for nutrition. Doesn't mean it doesn't have nutrition in it. But if you cut back on milk for solids, then they are receiving less calories and nutrition then they would on milk alone. I am not against solids. I just see so many moms on here worried about how much to give when it doesn't really matter, since its not life or death. It's just for fun/learning experience.

Just wanted to add(to my original post in here, not the convo from above) my babies were all big babies(above90%) that walked and talked well before a year. Lack of solids didn't harm their development in any way and didn't create picky eaters.

I honestly don't care what other mothers choose to do, as long as the baby is fed, that's all that matters. I just remember what being a new mom was like and all the stresses about doing whats right. I see so many moms that start baby foods at 4-6 months. I just like informing moms that there are other ways. No way is wrong to me. You have to do whats right for you and your baby.

Re: starting solids late related to textural issues?

I think we started around 5 or 5.5 months with our twins and it was very sporadic in the beginning since I wanted to ease into it. Somedays they would get rice cereal in the morning, some days not. After 6 months we got more into food and now at 11 months they are on table foods and pretty good eaters.

I think you need to go with your gut and you can always try something 1 day and not try again for another week. It is a learning process not only for them, but for parents too, so do what you like and what makes the little ones happy.
