Starting Potty Training question

So DD is 27 months old and I really dont see her being ready to potty train however I'd like to start with her. She is speech delayed which may be why she can't tell me she has to go. I do take her into the bathroom with me and she sees what you do. I have bought potty books for her and have just started putting her in pull ups ( so maybe she gets the idea of pulling up and down???) Not really sure if they are just like diapers.

Is this a good way to start? Is there anything you would do differently?

Re: Starting Potty Training question

we started pull ups with the potty training. My dd hates the idea of diapers so we call them big girl pants. She just starting to understand they have to go down. I think your on the right road.

where did you get potty book. I havent been able to find.

Re: Starting Potty Training question

Great way to start. My suggestion, when you are ready to really get her trained, is to not use pullups, since they are still a diaper. Put her in the plastic pants, (you can buy at Walmart). They are thick underwear with a plastic outerlayer to contain leaks. They also make training pants without the plastic which are like think cotton underwear. Its a pain to deal with all the accidents, but in my opinion after potty training two kids, pullups prolong the process whereas the real underwear and the instant annoyance of them being in soiled cotton underwear gets them trained faster.

for a couple months before we really started training, i put dd on the potty every night before her bath for a few minutes and read to her. Sometimes she happened to go, so she got to feel how it worked. Later we started with pull ups....

Re: Starting Potty Training question

My DS is only 18 mos - not anywhere ready yet. But he does come in with me sometimes - to say " bye bye pee'pees" and wash his hands. So I guess he's working in reverse...wash hands, flush... next he'll get his pants on then he should be ready to go.

DS has taken an interest in Elmo and I noticed that he has a lot fo toilet training items.

Good luck with your DD!
