Starting CIO late...
DD will be one on Saturday and I'm still nursing and rocking her to sleep and she is still waking up throughout the night (once or twice). I'm really getting tired of it, especially since she's starting to throw fits when she's overtired but doesn't want to sleep. I've attempted to leave her in the crib but she can stand up and I really feel like she'll never cry herself to SLEEP - I think she will just cry and cry while standing and waiting for me. This whole thing just breaks my heart but I know I need to let her learn how to put herself to sleep. Help! How do I start this whole process? Any recommendations for books or anything else? Thanks!

Re: Starting CIO late...
I did this w/ my daughter at 10 mos old... She's not 10.5 and sleeps in her crib fine most nights. Really, put her in the crib tired (even sleeping), explaining to her (even if she doesn't understand) that she'll be nice & comfy in her crib, & that's where she's going to sleep. Then put on white noise (I have the Sleep Sheep from Babies R Us... I love it) & put her in the crib, say good night, & walk out. I do this every night. First night, at 10 mos old, my daughter cried for an hour & went to sleep. When she wakes to eat in the middle of the night, I feed her (sometimes in my bed, sometimes on a chair in her room) & put her back to bed in the same manner as above. Usu cries for a min or two at most & goes to sleep.
The first night, you think they'll never go to sleep... my hubby & I just kept looking at each other, saying "should we take her out?" We hated it. But, we still enjoy the bedsharing some nights, and sometimes after I feed her in the middle of the night, I just take he rback in.
It's not great, but not as bad as you think & as ppl make it. Def better to do it now when the baby can't walk out of the room, than when they are 2 or 3 when they can keep walking out & you have to do it Super Nanny style.
If you have any q's, just ask. Good luck!

Re: Starting CIO late...
I started CIO at about a year old. Do you have a video monitor?
I did a bed time routine, and set up the monitor and left the room. . . I went and took a shower, washed dishes, anything LOUD to distract myself. The first night she cried for an hour
By the third night she cried for 5 minutes and did not wake up at all - she is 19 months and still going to sleep on her own and not waking up at night. . . its been life changing!
go for it!
