Star rebate help
We closed on our house in May and are going to be filing for the STAR exemption any day now (we had been waiting for our deed). But my question is, since we weren't the owners last year do we get the rebate check or do the previous owners? We didn't get a letter from the tax dept (i assume it was sent to the previous owners who had their mail forwarded), and i can't seem to get through on the help line. Does anyone know how this works when you bought a house mid-year? Thanks!

Re: Star rebate help
You don't get their check. STAR rebates are NOT transferrable.
They also can't get a check for the whole year either - because they haven't owned the place since May.
Not sure how it works - but I know the seller is obligated to tell the state that there has been a change in ownership - they can't allow you to take their check.

Re: Star rebate help
There is a rebate check?
I have STAR.. but my understanding is that it is simply a savings on your tax bill..
Am I wrong? I haven't gotten a rebate check this year or last!

Re: Star rebate help
It is a one time rebate check from the state. What i don't understand is that if it is for the 2007-2008 school roll then why would the previous owners get the check? We are paying all the taxes for that school year.

Re: Star rebate help
I finally got through to the helpline and unfortunately we are not eligible. We're in the town of hempstead and since we did not file for the STAR exemption by Jan 2 of 2007 (because we didn't own the house yet) we are not eligible for the rebate for the upcoming school year. However, the previous owners WILL get the rebate even though they no longer own the house and we will be paying the taxes. Nice.

They don't. They're not entitled to it b/c they're not the owners. No one will get a check this year.
You will get it next year if you apply.

Wait, what?
For the full amount? That doesn't make any sense and contradicts what I thought I just read the other day... No one should get a check this year, I thought.
That's stupid!

Re: Star rebate help
Yes, it's totally stupid. I specifically asked the girl on the phone if the previous owners would be receiving an application since they were signed up for the exemption as of Jan 2 of this year and she said yes. Maybe the application won't be accepted, but the system automatically generates it anyway. That's what I'm hoping.

Re: Star rebate help
The reason they get the rebate check is because it covers the PREVIOUS year, not the current year. Meaning, this years rebate check is based on your 2005 taxes and the fact that you lived in the home in 2006. You would be eligible for next years based on your 2006 taxes and the fact that you lived in the house in 2007..etc.

Re: Star rebate help
According to the rebate website, the relief is for the 2007-2008 school tax year, which we will be paying all of the taxes for. The income is based on your 2005 tax returns, but the relief is not for the 2006-2007 school year. Therefore, they should not be entitled to this money in my opinion.
