Stairs...removal of carpet?

Howdy y'all - my final project is approaching for our home renovation and I'm at a loss. I have no idea what to do with the stairwell leading up to the second floor where we live. It's an interior stairway covered with industrial carpet...and underneath it, is this gross red linoleum...and underneath that is plank wood.

The carpet MUST come out...so is it just easier to put in vinyl or linoleum on top of the cruddy one?

I want to keep this as INEXPENSIVE and get this done as quickly as possible.

In about two/three years, we're vacating the first floor and converting the entire house into a one-family, and I intend on installing brand new stairs that lead from upstairs (bedrooms) to downstairs (kitchen/living/dining, etc.)

What are your recommendations and who the heck do I go to for this?

I wouldn't put anything over the red linoleum. It's old and you may end up having adhesion issues. You can remove the linoleum and try to finish the wood if its not too damaged. If it is I would just put in a nicer carpet for the next few years until they are replaced.

The carpet has to go - I have a severe allergy to dust/dust mites and the carpet is causing me a lot of discomfort and breathing issues.

However, you do bring up a good point in taking out the old linoleum as well - thank you!
