Stained the front deck
I haven't posted house pics in a while, so here's some proof that I *am* still working on the house... just not as much updates now that *I'm* doing the work, and not professional contractors...
The wood is mahogany, and I love the color, but a few months out in the weather turned it greyish, so I stained it and protected it, and it looks very close to the original natural color now. Image Attachment(s):

Looks great.
Our back deck is mahogany and had turned the same grey color, so DH sanded and refinished it and we had the same result.

Re: Stained the front deck
What a great difference! It looks really nice, good job Shawn.
May I ask, did you prep the wood at all first? And what stain did you use? I painted my cinderblock foundation last weekend and the difference is so great, that I want to take on our front stoop. It's all wood but only the steps/landing are unpainted - the railings I have to scrape and repaint I think.
Anyway, would you mind sharing? I'd love to hear how you did it & how long it took.

It's essentially a brand-new deck, so I didn't bother prepping it, I just cleaned it really well. Plus, mahogany doesn't splinter or get rough, so there wasn't anything to sand down.
I didn't use a "green" stain.... I used a 4 year+ stain from Behr's from HD. The eco-friendly stains and finishes would have to be reapplied every year, so it probably winds up being environmentally equal in the long run (plus, less labor on my part... )

Oooooh! I'm telling!!
I'm not 100% green, no worries. I get close enough for comfort.
I suppose you're right, I'd have to sand. I don't have a sander but it's not that big of a stoop so I'll do what I did last time - ask the hubby to prep and then I'll do all the painting.
Thanks Shawn!

Pine is horrible with splinters, and that's what most people use, since it's the cheapest wood around. There is also the "fake wood" stuff like Trex, which is made from recycled plastic, so it looks almost like wood, but won't crack or splinter.
