Stage 3 cancer - lymph nodes
A very good friend of my mom's has been diagnosed with colon cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes. She is in Stage 3 now. She's in her 40s and has 2 young kids
Realistically, what are the odds of her beating this? She is going for chemo soon.
I have no idea what to expect...I just feel terrible about it.

Re: Stage 3 cancer - lymph nodes
From what I know, it's a common cancer and highly treatable.
My dad was diagnosed with the same in mid-March. He had surgery in early April to remove the affected colon. They removed the lymph nodes too and they tested positive for cancer, so his dr. recommended chemo.
He started chemo on May 1st, after he was well enough after his surgery. He goes in for a few hours for IV chemo every other Tuesday and afterward, he gets sent home with a fanny pack that contains a bag of chemo. It's attached to him through a port placed in his chest and he carries it on him for 3 days.
He just finished his 3rd round out of 12 (6 months worth). He went back to work after his 1st round. Now, he only takes off work during his "plug-in" and "plug-out" days. Everything tastes bad while he's doing chemo and he gets achy, tired and sometimes nauseous but he has a couple prescriptions that help a little bit. He lives alone and it amazes me that he's managing so well. I was there to help him through his first round but I can't be there all the time since I live 1200 miles away. I'd be a wreck if he didn't have such a great attitude. Get well wishes to your mom's friend. And prayers to her too.

Re: Stage 3 cancer - lymph nodes
i'm not sure about colon cancer... but 6 years ago, my dad was diagnosed with stage 2 (i think) lymphoma ( cancer of the lymph nodes). he had abut 6 months of chemo, and has been fine ever since! hes coming up on his 6 year being cancer free! you'd never know to see him today what he went through! anything can happen! i know for my dad what he feels helped him was not pushing it, taking some time off of work ( he owns his own business) and just resting when he needed to during the treatments. keep up the hope!!!

Re: Stage 3 cancer - lymph nodes
Anything is possible. My mom got 3 different cancers all within 6 months of each other, and she was at my wedding 7 months after her last chemo treatment dancing, drinking & having a ball. 4 years later she is still cancer free.
Good attitude & a great team of caregivers is so important too!

Re: Stage 3 cancer - lymph nodes
I don't want to be the downer on this thread, but once it has spread to the lymph nodes it has the possibility of metastasizing elsewhere.

Re: Stage 3 cancer - lymph nodes
My FIL was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in Nov of 2003. He had surgery and chemo and went into remission. The cancer has matastisized to his lungs three years after his original surgery. He is holding his own but has been straight on chemo (he also had radiation) since they found it in his lungs.
I think the later the stage the more likely a recurrence can happen. A lot of it depends on the treatment the patient gets and the individual.
