St. Charles Updates
I don't know if anyone would find this helpful but I went on a tour of St. Charles last weekend and they've made some adjustments.
In the past, opening visiting hours were from 7:30-8:30 and all babies were locked in the nursery. The times are still the same but now they are a "room-in" hospital which means the babies are always with you. You always have the option to put them in the nursery but that was a big change that I wasn't aware of. So now if you want, the babies are in your room during the open visiting hours.
One other thing is that now you can no longer pay for a private room. Private rooms are first come first serve and you can request one after delivering. If it is available it is all yours.
If you have any questions feel free to let me know and I will let you know if they covered that on the tour.
Good Luck to everyone!!

Re: St. Charles Updates
Awesome, thanks for the info! I love that they are a room in hospital now!! So if you request a private room after delivery, and they have one, it's yours for free??? When exactly would you request this? I'm having a scheduled c-section next month and would LOVE a free private room!
ETA: did they discuss breast feeding at all. I delivered there in 2011, and found that they were NOT very BF friendly, tried to push formula on my DD, encouraged me to let them give DD a bottle overnight while I slept (she was in the NICU), and I had actual nurses tell me false BFing info.

That's cool about the private rooms. I wanted one when I was there but they were too expensive.
Honestly though, I wouldn't have liked the room in option. I had both kids at St Charles and I LOVED that during open visiting hours they had to be in the nursery. I did not want a million visitors breathing on them and touching them. Gross. The rest of the time I kept them with me though.
It's such a great hospital though, I had a great experience there both times. Hope you guys do too.

I had the total opposite experience there.........I was there in 2008 and 2013. I felt like the lactation consultant wouldn't leave me alone. She was haunting me to BF morning, noon, and night. I tried with my DD but with my DS I just wasn't into it. I remember when I told the nurse he was to be formula fed, she gave me such an attitude.

Ugh! Maybe the NICU nurses were different? I had to ask to see the lactation consultant every day and she only spent maybe 5 minutes with me. Dd had slightly low blood sugar, and they were literally trying to force feed her formula, I let them bc I didn't know better, but luckily she wasn't interested in bottles but BF like a pro. But I didn't appreciate them telling me to stay in my room and let them do the night feeding! I set my alarm for every 2 hours and dragged ass to the NICU bc I didn't trust that they wouldn't feed her a bottle if I wasn't there. I was also the only mom in the NICU BFing. I don't care how anyone chooses to feed their baby, but those NICU nurses certainly were pushy about how I should get her used to the bottle too! I left that hospital with such a bad taste in my mouth, I swore I would switch next time, but I love Suffolk OBGYN. Hoping DS doesn't have to spend any time in the NICU and I can have a totally different experience.

Sorry you had that bad experience. You would think being in the NICU they would be more pro-BF. I guess not. Hope you have a better experience this time around.

Oh no I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the BFing. I do plan on trying to BF so I asked and they said lactation consultants would be available. I also talked to my obgyn and he made a note of it to let the specialist at the hospital know since I guess that all know each other so well?! Maybe that's an idea?
Yes you can not request one until after you deliver. I know you're a scheduled C but lets pretend you weren't... If you were going natural and came in in labor, labor could be 10 hrs so they would not hold the room for you. As soon as you deliver (C-section or natural) you tell the delivery nurse you want a private room and she'll call to the other side right away and if there's on available it's yours for free.
Hope this helps! :)

This was honestly how I felt when I found out about the rooming in. I was so happy initially that all the babies were locked away during opening visiting because I figured my new baby wouldn't get any unnecessary germs and honestly you never know if there's ever any crazies visiting someone else. So I was a little upset by this too but as DH reminded me, I can just tell the nurses I want the baby in the nursery during that time so it's still an option. I just didn't want to draw attention to the fact that I'm a "neurotic paranoid new mom" but if my babies the only one in the nursery, I guess I'll look like that now.

Thanks for all the info! I'll make sure to tell them as soon as I deliver. :) I told my OB I want to BF in recovery and I'll be sure to speak up to every nurse too. I BF DD til she was 2 yrs old, so hopefully I remember what to do and DS gets it like she did. Good luck!!

Really? I delivered there in 2011 as well, told them I wanted to breast feed, and never heard a word about formula.
The LC was less than helpful. She shoved DD on my boob while I was in recovery and I don't think I ever saw her again.

Yep! But these were the NICU nurses(DD had slightly low blood sugar). They were telling me there was no such thing as nipple confusion, and that I should get Dd used to a bottle early...(knowing better, I was able to speak up & eventually they head nurse "let" me EBF and gave DD an IV which literally solved the problem right away vs the 2 days of formula they tried to force on her which did nothing). But I'm glad to hear that nobody else had this issue there. Hoping DS doesn't have to go to be NICU for any reasons and I can have a better experience.

Who cares what anyone thinks. You do what you think is best for your new LO. I wouldn't care if my my baby was the only one in the nursery, I think it's healthier and safer for them. Good luck with everything!!!
