Squid Ink
The feast of the 7 fishes reminded me of this. Bobby Flay used it in one of his recipes (or the guy he challenged)
My mom always talks about having this with her pasta growing up - is it something that is hard to find? I would love to surprise her with a black pasta dish!

Hmmm, never bought but have had black pasta before and it was delish! Maybe you'd be able to find it a fish/seafood store. I know the local fish place by me has it. If not, you can find it online.

I know my local Italian market sells black squid ink fresh pasta. Maybe you can try there and then you wont have to make it yourself.

My mom buys calamari in squid ink (sold in a tin like sardines) to make black paella at the grocery store in the tuna section.

I would never eat squid and hate most seafood but tried squid ink pasta at babbo - it's part of the pasta tasting menu. it's amazing and looks really cool! i'd suggest buying fresh squid ink pasta pre-made, that way you don't risk making it end up too fishy
