Square Foot Gardening?

I am trying my hand at square foot gardening for the 1st time .... I would love any advice/suggestions/ideas.

So far I have:

4x12 planting bed with exisiting soil --- I will ammend with compost/peat moss

I started seedlings yesterday in jiffy pellets: sugar snap peas (8 plants), peas (8 plants), green beans (8 plants), cucumbers (4 plants), carrots (12 plants), basil (3 plants), parsley (3 plants), chives (3 plants), radishes (6 plants), marigolds (12 plants)

I have a feeling I will have to replant plant carrots from seeds direct in the garden though as I heard they don't transfer well. I plan on buying 2 tomato plants from seedlings.

My question is, and I am having trouble finding anything online is ....

I planted 2 seeds per jiffy pellet --- I will cut back to one seedling per pellet once they sprout.
Can I really fit as much as they say online --- for example, 4 pea plants per square foot? That seems like a lot... I want to start the garden right and don't want to overcrowd - but I don't want to waste any space either ...

Thoughts? Suggestions? Encouragement?

I would love to have a real edible garden this summer. Usually I do tomatoes, zucchinni and eggplant and no one but me eats them in the house - so I want to expand to items that the family will eat ...

Re: Square Foot Gardening?

Just be careful if your plants are vine or a bush also.

Like some tomato plants are vine. From seeds, my tomatoes are vines. But if I buy the seedlings at the nursery they all grew to be bushes which takes A LOT more space.

Also, you are really supposed to use the right soil mix to be successful.

Also your carrots need to be in 12 inch deep boxes, not just 6 inches.
