Spitzer is cutting Special Ed funding
Posting this here b/c i know there are some moms on here with children in special education.

THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN

This is such crap! Don't we pay more in school tax that most other counties in NY State? And doesn't most of that money go to other counties to subsidize their school districts? And this is we get in return? 
Unfortunately I can't make that rally but you can be sure that I'll be writing my legislators this weekend about this.

My brother was in sooooooooooooo many programs... I can't imagine what my parents would have done if this had happened during the time that he was still in school!

Cathy you are right. From what I remember hearing Long Island pays in a ridiculous amount into the state budget but doesn't even get back half of what they put in. Meanwhile upstate districts that are smaller enjoy very low taxes and have more 'equipment' or more new 'equipment' then many of our schools do. It is a quote. I for one am sick of funding NYC schools. There tax base is lower than ours AND anyone who works in the city has to pay city tax so come on already start funding your schools. Screw a new stadium and pay for your own damn schools.
I know in my district we need new textbooks for my subject and we were told not this year there is not enough money, hopefully next year I can't even begin to tell you about the other things we need in our schools but can't buy- like my students' desk being older than I am and they are starting to fall apart from stress. It's bad and now they want to take money away from Special education again. Meanwhile the services the children need and will receive will not decrease so once again where will that money come from- from the things that we need. It's sad. The special education children have the RIGHT to have their needs met and the schools would have more than enough money to buy what they need if this Governor would make every other county step up to their appropriate plate!!!
Just another reason to hate living on Long Island lately.

These kids would NOT be able to function if it werent for the support.

I'm still so annoyed about this. DH and I were talking about it last night and he pointed out that it will probably effect EI services in many districts.
I think it's sad that good old Eliot is turning his back on some of the people he used to work to protect when he was Atty General. And kinda ironic since his wife runs Children for Children so he should be aware that these services are helpful to many children. Shame on him.

This is despicable! Long Island already gets shafted with such a small state amount of education funding allotted to the districts based on the # of children in public schools, now this.

If they don't provide the services, they get sued, which costs more in the long run. Perhaps the funds will be better allocated in the district now and so much money won't be going to administrators.

It's going to come from school tax increases and bond issues. My school district just raised a bond last year to pay for things that were supposed to have been covered with a previous bond but "other, more pressing issues" came up and they used the money for that instead. I think it's crap that we have to keep paying more and more and other counties don't.
Did you know that in NYC schools pre-school is provided free through the school district? Yet we on LI have to pay privately for that on top of our school taxes. It's not right.

Right, but regardless of whether or not special ed funding is cut, taxes will still go up for one reason or another. Our district provides free pre-k. Outside of NYC, I've never heard of a district providing free pre-school, other than special education pre-school or headstart.

Pataki did the same thing....It goes on constantly.
We only get back something like 17% of funding for our schools from the State...even though our local taxes pay for about 75% of the education budget...
It makes me sick...
He talks about lowering property taxes etc...yeah that's nice BUT it does nothing to our property tax bills b/c the government keeps giving our schools less and less money..which takes up about 60% of our tax bill.
