Spinoff to working- Am I nuts?

I am planning to stop working on Dec. 22. By then I'll be almost 39 weeks. I am a teacher and figured that the holiday break was a good transition.

Am I nuts to be staying that long?

I am almost 34 now and my back is killing me already. Do you think I should leave earlier?

I worked up till the end with my son and I was glad I did. I liked having the extra time when he was here.

Do you have the option to change your mind if you need to go out earlier?

Re: Spinoff to working- Am I nuts?

As a fellow teacher, 13 years, I've learned not to be a hero.

I used to drag myself in when I was sooooo sick and guess what?

... No one noticed, no one thanked me for my dedication and nothing was mentioned in my yearly review.

I no longer play the hero. Trust me, I'm no slacker, but now I do what's best for me and my health.
I come from a family of many teachers and administrators and they all say the same thing.

Can you leave a week before Christmas?
Honestly, the holidays can be so hectic it's not like you are bound to be relaxing much or get much quiet time.

We don't like to admit it, but life will go on without us.

YOU ARE NUTS! I planned on staying until that date too until I talked to my doctor. She reminded me even if you don't have to do anything, Christmas and all its craziness is only 3 days laterChat Icon I thought it would be a good transistion too from my school seeing that I was due 5 days after you. I decided after talking to HR, that I am going out Dec. 15th. I am so worried about my students that I forgot to worry about ME!
I would move it up at least a week, maybe two since you are due almost a week before me.

ETA: I also have 46 days of sick leave that won't even be exhausted in my six week leave so I am not losing anything. Plus my disability insurance that I pay extra for will not go into effect for seven days. I would actually lose money if I stayed at work.

Thanks for helping me come to my senses. I am more worried about my students than I am for myself. I have to do what's best for me and the baby and if it is leaving early, so be it.

Each person and pregnancy is different. You do what you feel is right. If you feel strong enough [not too tired/exhausted], then go for it. I was going to work up until the week before my due date the first time around, but I got really tired from the weight at the end and changed it to 2 weeks. Good thing I did...my daughter was 1 week early. I spent the 1 week I had to rest buying the remainder of the furniture [yes furniture] I needed, assembling it and installing a car seat.

Re: Spinoff to working- Am I nuts?

The only reason I am working so long up until the end is so that I can have my disability time off with my DD instead of sitting home by myself. If you can afford it, I would say to stop before the holidays to make it easier and less stressful for you.

Same here! I'm 38 weeks and working this week in the office and next week from home (since its a short week). I'd drive myself crazy sitting home alone, and I as much pay as possible!

Re: Spinoff to working- Am I nuts?

I was planing on working as long as possible. I also work in a school and have a limited amount of sick days. Of course, I'm not sure how I'm going to feel toward my due date so I'll have to wait and see.

Woah!! That's great if you can do it. I am due just a few days before you and ly last day is Dec 8 (I know - I'm a slacker Chat Icon ). But I am so ready to be done. I have to walk a lot to get to work and in the past week I think I have dropped and I can barley walk and am so uncomfortable.

So I say if you feel great go for it but I would play it by ear if you can!Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to working- Am I nuts?

the week before the kids are so crazy that they don't learn much and what they do they forget over the break. Take the extra week and prepare for your baby!

Re: Spinoff to working- Am I nuts?

I'm due that week also. I plan on working till the Friday before break, 12/22 also. I don't think your nuts. My back is killing me and the baby's head hasn't been floating around and has been in position for three weeks now. So PRESSURE!! Do what you can, if you need to leave earlier than that's what you do. My motivation is more time after the baby is here!

I'm scheduled to work until after my due date Chat Icon

I want all the time I have off for baby!

If it doesn't change the time off after then do it. Otherwise do the "see how it goes" thing.

Re: Spinoff to working- Am I nuts?

I worked until the end- granted- I went early but I've very glad that I worked until the end- if I stayed home, I just would've been bored.
granted- I had a pretty easy 3rd trimester and the commute didn't bother me really- i took my time & had no problems- if anything I liked the exercise and the walking did me good.

Re: Spinoff to working- Am I nuts?

Nope not nuts at all. I am working up til 2 weeks of my due date, I would go NUTS if I took off earlier than that. So 38 weeks for me when I stop working. DH wanted me to stop months ago but I just cant see myself not working, I love it and its easy money.

I left work when I was 38 weeks and I'm so glad that I did. I've taken the time for myself and ofcourse to do some shopping for Christmas....Chat Icon
I'm enjoying sleeping late because once the baby gets here, I know I won't be able to do that for a long time. If I were you, I'd follow Tah's advice.....You will be so happy that you did. I am.
