maybe a dry clean? I really don't know but that was the first thing I could think of.

What about using Woolite Extra Delicates Care and put your machine on a delicates wash? I don't know if that detergent is safe for newborns. I hate when baby stuff loses that new softness!!

I was extremely pleasantly surprised that none of the super soft blankets I have changed or lost any of their softness in the wash. I wash everything cold, delicate cycle, and dry on low. It's pretty amazing, but everything is still just as soft as before I washed them the first time, and it's been months.

I was really bummed about this too. I first washed all of my receiving blankets in my own washer/dryer (older models) with dreft and downy free fabric softener. They came out soft, but sorta "pilly" looking. After that, I used my SIL's washer/dryer - she has new high efficiency machines that have a hand wash cycle and a bunch of delicate drying options. It made a difference. We ordered new washer/dryers for our new house, but until then I think I will just use my SIL's machines. If you have a newer machine, just go with the most delicate cycle. If not, maybe you can use someone elses for the first initial wash.
