Spinoff to talking/words UPDATE OP WITH NEW QUESTION
Does it count as a word if they don't fully pronounce it correctly?
For example, DD can identify a penguin but when she says it, it's more like "pen-in". Does that count as a word or does it only count when they can say it correctly?
ETA: She's 20 months old if that makes a difference.
New question:
Anyone's kid say some words with an accent? Sometimes I think she's British lol.
Dance is dahnce Hand is hahnd
But then color is kind of Jamaican sounding- cohler

I figured. It's kinda fun trying to figure out what she's saying in her toddler language lol.
I love when she says fork which totally does not sound like fork.

My son is 3 and would have next to no words if we only counted the ones he said correctly.
Def count them.

Yup it counts. Dd1 used to say baa for up. Now idea why but when she said said she wanted to be held lol. It was just her word. The dr counted it. Dd2 says crap for cap. Makes me laugh each time she's looking for her crap lmao

Yes. I just asked my dr this last week because there are about ten words my son only uses the first syllable for. She said it's his way of saying it and as long as he uses his word consistently, it's fine.

Re: Spinoff to talking/words UPDATE OP WITH NEW QUESTION
DS watched Peppa Pig so he used to say some things in a British accent. And some things he says without a NY accent (like coffee).

Spinoff to talking/words UPDATE OP WITH NEW QUESTION
Yes, definitely counts. My DD is 3 and talks nonstop all day, but many of her words are pronounced incorrectly. I always know exactly what's she's saying, but other people can't always understand her.
When she first learned the word "fork" she couldn't pronounce the r sound in words, so it always sounded like "fuk" and once we were In a restaurant and she was screaming "fuk! Fuk! Fuk!" so embarrassing because we knew she just wanted her fork, but everyone around us must have thought we were the worst parents ever.
