Spinoff to kid accidents - have you ever hurt your child by accident?

I can understand how awful moms feel if they couldn't prevent an accident - but what about if you do something yourself?

When Cailen was maybe a week or two old, I took him out of his carseat in the house, but the handle was still up so I could carry him in, and I misjudged where it was, and clonked Cailen's forehead into it as I lifted him... It was a very light clonk (just a light tap) but it starteld him and he began crying...

Oh my GOD I felt awful. I know things happen all the time where moms might bump into their kids, trip on them, sit on them, etc - that must be so terrible....

Anyone want to share?

Re: Spinoff to kid accidents - have you ever hurt your child by accident?

To this day, my mother has the worst story.....mind you this occirred before strict child infant seat laws or automatic locks....

When my brother was about 2, he climbed out of his carseat and OPENED the door and FELL OUT of the car WHILE my mother was (very slowly) driving. She had just dropped off my sister and I at school.

She said she saw the crossing guard jumping up and down in her rear view and that's what made her stop.

He wasn't hurt, just a few scratches and a bump- obviously it did no lasting damage as my brother is a PhD now- but to this day it's the one story she still gets upset about when someone mentions it.

The first day we had Sarah home, it was just DH and I with her for a little bit at first, and he had to run out to get a few things so I was alone with her. I tripped walking over to the Pack N Play and dropped her into the bassinette head first. For a second it seemed like she was going to fall out of it over the side. Thankfully she didn't. She slept throught the whole thing, and wouldn't wake up when I was calling her name over and over. I was convinced that I'd damaged her brain, but she's been advanced on speaking and all that stuff. I still can see it all in my head, and I still feel like an awful mommy for doing it. Chat Icon

Chat Icon Just last week, I was putting on Bryan's shirt and accidently scratched the top his head. He didn't even make a peep, just looked at me like "Whooaaa what happened". I felt soooo bad. The scratch is now fading away and I had family (parents) ask what happened. I was honest and still feel so bad.

When Andrew was a few weeks old I was cutting his nails and I accidentally cut his skin too. It didn't bleed too badly, but I was horrified.

Re: Spinoff to kid accidents - have you ever hurt your child by accident?

When I was on maternity leave, I used to strap Alex into the Bjorn and walk on the treadmill on the lowest setting, to calm her down, or get her to sleep at the wee hours of the night.

So, one night, at about 3am, I brought her to the basement, put on the Bjorn and lifted her up to put her in the Bjorn. I didn't realize I was standing right under a beam in the basement that was lower than the rest of the ceiling, and accidentally lifted her right into it. She knocked her head, and started crying hysterically.

I've never felt so awful in all my life!

Re: Spinoff to kid accidents - have you ever hurt your child by accident?

OMG, yes. So far I have..

Scratched his face while taking off a shirt (the zipper scraped his poor face, i had no clue..)

Accidentally caught his chubby leg in the carseat snap (DH did this too, we felt AWFUL)

Bumped his head on the car getting him in. He was fine but cried out of being startled I think...

And once Johnny threw his face really hard into my teeth. I was smiling at him and WHAM. He had teeth marks on his poor head.

God I should have the authoritied called on me!!!! Thank goodness they have no real memory right now, lol!!

I've bumped her head on that car seat holder more than once, but the main thing was her rolling off the bed, it was an accident that could've been prevented ! She was fine, I was a MESS !!!

I have scratched Cailen a few times with my nails - I cut my nails sooo short now - last time I went for a manicure the woman looked at me funny!

I am so afraid of him falling off the bed or the couch....

I have also scratched Bella before and have since cut all my nails.

The worst was once I was holding her before her head was 100% steady and she smacked her head into my mouth and hit my tooth. She was screaming and I ended up with a bloody lip.

I did the same thing with Luka but he was maybe a week old. I didn't know their skin grew behind their nails for the first month or so but he did bleed a little. Then a week later I was getting him undressed in the kitchen for his 2nd bath and he hit the front of his against the coffee maker (perculator) and he burned his knuckles. All 4 were bright red but never blistered. I couldnt figure out why he started to cry hystically because I did move the coffee maker back so he wouldn't touch it. Well after that incident we never had a bath in the kitchen again.

I did the same thing with Jack. I had him sitting on my bed in the middle, I went into the bathroom and then thump! He made his way all the way to the edge and rolled off. He had a bump on his head. He was about 6 months old.

I once tried to cut Jordana's nails right after the bath. Not a good idea. Her skin was so soft that the clipper cut her. SHe was fine. I started crying and it took me about 2 weeks before I would cut her nails again.

Re: Spinoff to kid accidents - have you ever hurt your child by accident?

At the hospital, Cailen's nails were so long he was scratching his face. I took the baby nail clippers and just pressed down lightly - I was nervous to begin with. I didnt even do anything, just lightly pressed slowly, and he began to cry and whimper. I stopped then and there. I am glad I did - the nurse told me he would have bled - I would have felt horrible!!!

I was lifting DD out of her carseat and didn't realize her arm has slipped back under the harness. It got yanked a little bit. She hardly noticed but I felt so bad.

When I was a kid, I fell out of a moving car too. My mom was slowing down for a stoplight, thank goodness!

Re: Spinoff to kid accidents - have you ever hurt your child by accident?

oh sure. She's not quite a year yet and I"m not sure I can count all the times I've done things that hurt her. I cut her cuticle while cutting her nail once, bumped her head countless times not on the carseat but on the car when I lift her out of the seat, I've definitely scratched her a few times by accident. You name it. Oh she fell off the couch too. Good thing they have short memories huh!

Re: Spinoff to kid accidents - have you ever hurt your child by accident?

This past Friday I dropped my cell phone right on Luca's head. I had my purse over my shoulder and went to pick up the car seat. As I leaned over, the phone slipped out of my purse and wacked him on his forehead. He cried for a quick second but he was fine.

Re: Spinoff to kid accidents - have you ever hurt your child by accident?

This wasn't even my kid but I was at work and it was bring your kids to work day. One of the VP's kids, an adorable little 3 yr old girl, followed me around like a puppy (I am in HR so I was with the kids all day). Well, she asked me to help her snap the top onto something and when I did, he little skin got caught in between the cover and the object....I still remember, her eyes got really wide, she started screaming and then big tears...OMG I still feel guilty to this day! Re: Spinoff to kid accidents - have you ever hurt your child by accident?

When my brother was a few days old, my parents brought him on a boat. As my father was stepping off the boat onto the dock, my brother slipped out of his arms and INTO the water! The boat was luckily rocking away from the dock at that moment and my father scooped him up right before the boat covered him. Chat Icon
