spinoff to Feeding Workers
IMO, this is getting out of hand. I feel like I have to tip everyone and their brother - now feed them! They are being PAID! It is their JOB! I am not saying I am not nice, nor am I saying that I don't offer them something cold to drink, but seriously...
No one feeds me when I am doing my job, whether it is at my job or if it is in a person's home. And I wouldn't expect it. My dad has an HVAC company and my brother works for him. They don't expect to be fed, or tipped or anything when they are in someone's home installing their AC or heating systems. They are there to do the work and to go home. They are not going to do a better or worse job depending on if the person FED them or not. Personally, I would rather the person leave me alone and let me do my work.
Those of you who do all of that are really very nice, but I now feel like this is the norm and I feel like a total B**ch if I don't do it.
Sorry - total rant that got out of control - I am just curious if everyone does this.

I agree 100%.
One of my biggest pet peeves are the tip jars I see on almost every counter these days. They drive me nuts!

I was in Subway yesterday getting a sandwich and the lady behind the counter actually pushed the jar in my direction while giving me my change back.

Re: spinoff to Feeding Workers
there's absolutely no need to pay for everyone's lunch.... I categorize this under the current 'tip mania'
Tip mania is the inexplicable sense of obligation to give everyone and their brother a tip. On LIW, a common posting concerns tipping clergy seriously, no one would have EVER considered that 40 years ago.
I also feel no guilt in not paying for a plumbers lunch. After all, I'm pretty sure that guy earns more than I do!

Me too. I just responded on the other thread. They are doing their job. No one buys me food when I am working, I am responsible for my own lunch. Why should it be any different for people doing work in your house? Especially with the prices contractors charge.

Re: spinoff to Feeding Workers
I don't consider tipping $ and feeding or offering drinks in the same category. I would never tip a woker I am paying good money to do a job. However, if people are working in or outside my house all day in the middle of summer with sweat pouring off, I am going to offer them a drink. And if I happen to order a pizza and have some left over, I am going to offer it to the them. I consider this hospitality.

Re: spinoff to Feeding Workers
Of course everyone can do as they feel fits the situation but, I use to run a service company and I know that a person who offered me or my workers a drink and if I was extended lunch, you had the use of your property in a much more expidited fashion. Example: I just had my burner replaced and converted to natural gas, there was no water valve on the intake to the old burner for fresh water. When they cut the water in the morning, I asked if anyone needed a bottle of water and I told them that I was purchasing a Pie for lunch. I had the use of my house water in less than an hour. They could have left me with no water (no running toilets) for the whole day, that part of the installation was a good 5 hours away. It pays to be nice and 11 bucks for a pie isn't gonna break the bank.
