Spinoff to Cake Smash Post
As DD"s 1st birthday is approaching I am finding myself with more questions than I had when she was a newborn.. and as always you ladies are awesome with your advice!
I was just wondering for those who did the "cake smash" when did you do it?
1) Did you do it on your LO's actual first bday day?
2) Did you do it at their first birthday party?
3) Did you do it as a separate event and have a photographer take photos?
If you did 1 or 2.. did you hire a photographer or did you take your own photos
Is the purpose of teh cakesmash just as a photo opportunity?

1) We are doing it this Saturday 10/20. Her birthday is Thursday 10/18.
2) We had her party 2 days ago, and gave her a big piece of cake on her highchair tray. She stared at it. Then she stuck her finger in it, made a face, put her finger in her mouth, and shuddered. Definitely NOT what I expected, LOL.
3) We are doing it Saturday with a photographer. Needless to say, with a different type of cake which will hopefully elicit a better reaction!! To me it's just a photo opportunity at this point. We are also doing her holiday pictures at the same time (albeit, BEFORE the cake).

1... Nope, did it with a prof photographer a few weeks before his actual bday
2... Just gave him cake st the party and took pics myself. He made a mess.
3... Prof photographer when I did the 1 yr pics, but the last part of course. Then more pics of him eating cake at his bday party and the next day was his actually bday so it was only family. We gave him cake again and took pics again.

Did it a few weeks before as part of her 1yr photos. She had a dress, a fairy costume with wings and then her diaper only at the ends! LOL she made a MESS and a half! 
Good times.
Her actual bday we had no cake at all. Took her to the Zoo!

Had two cake smashs. The first was three days before her birthday during her 1st bday photo shoot, and the second was at her birthday party (which was also on her actual birthday).

On her first birthday we had my parents over for pizza and gave her a $5 cake from Stop and Shop to put her hands in.
I took pics with my point and shoot.
She cried.
She hated it.
I was glad I didn't waste money on anything futher.
Cake smash-done.

We did a cake smash a week before his birthday with a professional photographer. I LOVE the pictures and am so glad we did although DS did not love having cake all over him at first took him a while to warm up
