spinoff to bumpers thread: SIDs cause......
years ago, I saw an exposee on a huge scandinavian research study that had an identical conclusion to this summary of new zealand research.... If I recall correctly, in the scandinavian study, the gov't banned fire retardents in mattresses and SIDs incidents reduced by 90% or so... the remaining SIDs cases all occurred while the baby was sleeping on chairs/couches (which still contained fire retardent treatments)
SIDs caused by fire retardent chems in mattresses (and furniture)
since the wrapping works, I just wanted to shoot the FYI out to everyone, in case you want to do that...
personally, even before reading this webpage, we were already registered for the naturepedic mattress.....

My son was a SIDS baby. He was wide awake in my husbands arms when he started to pass. Just throwing that out there

My heart goes out to you and your family. I had a friend who lost a LO to SIDS.
I've heard about the mattress wrapping from people in New Zealand on another message board. Interesting concept.

OMG I am so sorry That is so tragic
I should clarify totally don't think the mattresses are the ONLY cause (as implied by the article), but I bet it is one of several contributing factors along with overheating, improper ventilation, and I'm sure underlying and undiagnosed disease states....
But mattresses appear to play a role in some cases since 2nd and 3rd children sleeeping on hand-me-down mattresses from their older siblings have 2-3X the risk of SIDS as babies sleeping in new mattresses.
(Also, ignore any implications in that article that there's some mass conspirarcy so researchers can maintain funding to research the problem for more years That's simply ridiculous.)

I hope that somthing so simple could save so many babies lives. Thanks for passing this info along!
I just stated what happened to my son because I didn't want other moms to assume that if they listen to the article that they could ignore the other things that have reduced the amount of SIDS babies (like putting them to sleep on their backs,etc...)
