Wow, amazing how times change. My quinceanera was at my father's wife apartment and it was nothing fancy since that's all he could afford.

Re: spinoff, sweet 16
My Neice wants her sweet 16 at Sandcastle where I got married!
DH's cousins have had them at top halls like Russos on the bay with photographers, videographers, and more guests then I had at my wedding!

Re: spinoff, sweet 16
When we picked our menu for our wedding there was a Sweet 16 going on. Black Tie, photographer and mother in a ballgown and the "Princess" decked out with a gown, prof, hair/makeup and a tiara bigger than any wedding I've ever seen... She had it downstairs and easily had many more guests than my wedding.
PUHHHHHHHHHH-LEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZ
My Sweet 16 was in 1986 in my Dad's paneled basement. We moved the stereo downstairs, rented all the Molly Ringwald movies for a video marathon, decorated with Duran Duran posters, my Dad bought a sheet cake all of my girlfriends slept over and we were styling

Yeah when I went to my hall for a food tasting we saw the same thing. The sweet 16 girl's dress was white and with everything we saw going on my FIL INSISTED it was the bride and it was a wedding!!! It took him like an hour to grasp the concept that it was a sweet 16 and NOT a wedding!!

Tania, I have a question about quinceaneras. I used to teach in a school with a lot of latina students. Did they start as a religious ceremony and become more of a social/cultural thing? Or were they always a cultural thing and some people had a religious component to it. When I was in Mexico, I saw girls at the church having theirs and it seemed like such a beautiful ceremony, but I didn't know if people in the US did that.

We have friends who had one for their daughter. I saw the photos - it was just like a wedding, with attendants in gowns and everything!

Re: spinoff, sweet 16
Ready to laugh - I went to a sweet 16 at Russo's on the bay last year... Every extra possible including a full Viennese hour, a photographer, the sweet 16 girls had attendants and was in a gorgeous BALL GOWN with a tiara and the works,
She had a DJ and hired like 6 dancers that wore velour suits that had her name embroidered on them - She changed into a pink velour outfit and did a choreographed routine in the middle of the dance floor with the dancers while everyone watched. Then she went back and changed into her gown! They gave really great favors also!

I'm not really sure, I know that in Colombia where I'm from you do have a mass before the actual party but is not like a rule. I know that I just had the party.

That's so out of control! I had mine at my parents house with very close friends and family over and my mother did all the cooking.

Re: spinoff, sweet 16
I was watching "My Super Sweet 16" & teasing DH last night. His cousin/Goddughter is having hers at the Raddison in October & I keep telling him that there are going to be dancers & strobe lights & things! I should ask his cousin if she wants o to borrow my wedding tiara!
On the other hand, mine was in my parents' living room & I wore culottes.

Did we go to the same party?? LOL Same thing here-no choreographers though- I DO know for a fact that the menus at Russos are ALL the same...so the stuff you have for a Wedding there is the same as a sweet 16, anniversary, etc...they only charge you more bc its a wedding.....but talk about going overboard!
