Spinoff: Sorry if this brings controversy, BUT...

Regardless of what people think of "daylabourers," I have a question for anyone who wants to answer. If things got so bad in the US, would you move to a foreign country & live/work illegally? I mean, think about it....really think about it. Could you choose to live in a way that every day could make or break you, and that so many political and social discussions revolved around just your sheer existence in another country?

I am just curious since so many people are quick to have something to say, whether a supporter/sympathiser or someone who is "against" the day laborers....

And just to clarify, I have nothing against people's opinions, regardless of what they are. I just know for me personally, I could never live in such uncertainty.

Re: Spinoff: Sorry if this brings controversy, BUT...

I feel lucky not to have to make that decesion

I can only imagine how bad it would have to be before I do what they do- so that is why I feel for them

Re: Spinoff: Sorry if this brings controversy, BUT...

I could never just pick up and go to another country without knowing where i would work/sleep. Also, as the "rule follower" (or fun police as DH refers to it) that i am, I would have a really hard time morally working some where illegally. I always like to have a plan. But at the same point if it was so terrible in the us that i had to leave, I guess I would do what I had to to survive

Sometimes living in uncertainty is better than you and your family living in "poverty" (poverty as in 3rd world standards).

Re: Spinoff: Sorry if this brings controversy, BUT...

I personally think it would be much harder to do that in any country then here. I think a lot of forein countries have it more under control!
I know for sure it would be pretty darn hard to pull off in England for example Chat Icon

there is also very high unemployment in some european contries- so they do have issues with this- when I was in Germany I was watching the news- and people were rioting for the right to go work in other EU countries

I totally agree with you.

I know that in Aruba its very hard for someone that is not an Aruba citizen to get a job and if you want to buy a houe there you can not live there full time.

Re: Spinoff: Sorry if this brings controversy, BUT...

I personally cannot imagine what the living conditions really are to make people come here illegally. I have read a few books on the topic and it's astonishing and incomprehensible.
We have NO idea how lucky we are compared to most other countries, not just third world.
Do I think that I could leave here, no. But, I don't really know what their lives are like back "home" and figure it must be pretty bad to subject themselves to life here.

Re: Spinoff: Sorry if this brings controversy, BUT...

I hope I never have to know what it feels like to be so desperate... however I can't say I would never do it because I just don't know...

My Dh's father came over here illegally about 20 years ago from Ecuador. Soon after he was granted amnesty and he became an American Citizen-

He owns his own company and is very successful...he put two kids through Catholic School, and college-had a third child who is now going into 6th grade- they have a beautiful home in a nice area in CT, they drive nice cars-they vacation...they live a nice life... I tell you this, because it was not after LOTS of struggle and harship...

FIL left his wife (my MIL) and children (my Dh and his brother) in Ecuador- he left for a few years in order to make enough money to "send" for his family. They came over here and struggled- but now it has all paid off-

I get upset thinking about what it must have been like for my DH without his father- I can't imagine leaving my family and then sending for them years after-

BUT, he did what he had to do in order to make a better life for his family.

my dh's parents did the same thing. dh was born here, after his parents came, but they are hardworking wonderful people.

the "follow the rules" better than most of the friends and parents i have growing up.

"illegal" immigrants are not hardened criminals. they are not out to get your or your family. they don't want to milk the system. we don't need to import people to do that...we've got tons of American borns lined up for that job.

the thing is, they live in uncertainty in their home countries every day too. there may be more "comfort" in knowing the language and people...but not knowing if you will have money to feed/clothe/house your family...that uncertainty is the same...the only difference is...they see an opportunity HERE that does not exist where they come from.

as for me, yes...if I thought I could provide for my family better in another place, I'd take the risk.

During very tough times, man (and woman) will do whatever it takes to survive. Whether that means doing something illegal or something contrary to their own morals. The name of the game is survival. And if your family is starving you're not gonna let some law stop you from doing what you've gotta do to put food on their table. All you need to do is look in a history book and you'll see what people are willing to do to either make a better life for themselves or to simply live to see the next day...

Re: Spinoff: Sorry if this brings controversy, BUT...

I think most of us couldn't imagine making that kind of step because we come from a country of privilege, and have no concept of how harsh conditions must be to contemplate a move like that.

I know my ancestors fled Russia right before, and during WWII because of the holocaust and everything leading up to it. If anything like that were to happen, absolutely, I would do whatever it takes to remove myself and my loved ones from a situation like that.

a man I work with - he is about 70- at the age of 18- he packed a back pack and WALKED accross europe- (he is from an eastern european country) till he found the US Army- and enlisted on the spot

if the crap hit the fan- (maybe I watch too much Jericho) but I think everyone would do what ever then have to do to surive

if the chose is sit here and die or cross the boarder illegally into the promise land - where there are jobs and food- don't tell me you are going to sit there and starve!

Very well put and I couldn't agree with this more. "Survival of the fittest" is the name of the game.

Honestly I dont think I could do it. I give people who do it a lot of credit. My great grandfather did it when he came here from Italy all alone. I think it would be very hard but like other posters if it came down to me having to steal or something illegal to put food on my kids table then I would. Thankfully Im not faced with those decisions. Tough call.
