Spinoff: RE - Microchips
Those of you who are relying on microchips only for identifying your dogs and/or cats be forewarned. There are two Microchip dealiers in the US - Avid or Home Again. You can get chips from either company depending on who your vet or breeder prefers - most shelters or vets don't have both though. So, if your pet is lost and the recovering agency doesn't have the right scanner, they don't even pick up the chip. They may assume the animal isn't even chipped.
That's why it's always safer to have both a chip and tags.

I had no idea about this--they scanned Delilah at the vet before she gave birth, and nothing came up. We assumed that was that...but I can't believe they don't pick up each others' microchips! That's ridiculous!

That is scary. The two companies should work together. It's sad to think about all the animals who might have been chipped and were scanned with the worng scanner. Those poor families looking for their pets! I'm getting upset now.

Re: Spinoff: RE - Microchips
After what happened to my kitty today with his collar IDK if I am going to put one on him again (see this post )
I found some information about microchips Compatibility and this is from the Home Again website:
What’s unique about the new HomeAgain WorldScan™ reader?
The new HomeAgain WorldScan™ reader, manufactured by Digital Angel, Inc., reads all microchips utilizing the 125 kHz and 128 kHz radio frequencies (HomeAgain, AVID and Trovan) including those that previously could not be read by all U.S. scanners. The HomeAgain WorldScan reader also detects the 134.2 kHz microchips, or ISO chip, commonly used outside of the United States and can read some Digital Angel 134.2 kHz ISO chips. While the new scanner will not display the number of all ISO chips, it will indicate the presence of the chip so that steps toward a recovery can be put in place.
So, it seems that as long as the chip is 125kHz it should be okay.

Actually still not true...the new scanner is very expensive and not supplied to vets/ shelters so they have to buy it or use the old ones. So far it seems that most are just using the older scanners and waiting until they breakdown before buying new scanners.

Does he/she try to get out? If not, don't worry about a collar so much. It's really only necessary if the pet is going outside. It's more dangerous to have them alone with a collar, than with no collar at all in the house.

He likes to wait at the bottom of the stairs / comes down the stairs as we are walking in (we're in a 2nd floor apt.) He's QUICK, so I am worried his curiousity will get the best of him and he'll run! But he is and will stay a strictly indoor cat.
I talked with DH about the collar, and we are NOT going to put it on him again. Stinks b/c I bought it and threw out the cardboard it comes on, but I don't want him chokeing again like this morning.
We'll get the microchip when we bring him back to NSAL to get nutered. Hopefully if it ever needs to be read, it will be by a universal scanner!!

That is really the best you can do. Misty has an Avid chip and I can only hope for the best if she ever gets lost.
