spinoff q to jewelry parties, etc...
a friend of mine just bought a condo and she just informed me that she will be having jewelry party and needed my address so she can send the invite... this will be sort of like a housewarming for her. at these types of parties i always feel obliged to buy something, and i really dont have the extra $$ to drop on jewelry that i don't need.. would it be okay in this case to show up but not buy anything and just give her a housewarming gift? or should i just decline and ask if i can see her place another time if it seems rude that i don't buy anything?

If its a good friend, I would say exactly what you said here. Tell her you'd love to get together and see her new place, but you can't afford it right now--if I remember you just bought a house too right? I'm sure she'll understand and either make other plans with you or tell you to come anyway!

Tell her you would love to stop by, but that money is tight for you right now, so you might not be able to purchase from the show. Ask her if she would mind if you just came by to visit and see her. If it were me, I would want to see my friend and I wouldn't care if she bought anything.

uggg...why would she make her housewarming party a jewelry party at the same time? I think that's really rude!
Ok, I got that out.
I would decline the invite and give her a gift the next time you see her.

I don't think it was rude of her. Maybe she felt odd having a housewarming party for herself and thought that this was the best way to do it. I think that bringing a housewarming gift would be absolutely fine! Who made up this rule that you HAVE to buy something at one of these parties? It's ridiculous IMO.
