Spinoff: How many presents do you get your school-aged child for their Bday?

Someone asked a smilar question on parenting about 2 year olds...

And I am wondering the same thing about the school aged kids?

I feel like we got her more presents when she was younger. The parties were smaller then because it was mostly family and a few very close friends.

Now she has a long list of friends to invite to the party and we spend $350-400+ on her birthday party, so there is less to spend on actual presents for her.

We only got her a few small gifts this year from us for her birthday. We know she will get plenty at her party and I really do think of the party as a big gift for her.

Do you shower your DC with gifts for their birthday? Or do you pretty much think of their party as their present?

Just wondering what everyone else does out there!

Melissa

1 and done!Chat Icon

My kids always choose expensive parties so money is a consideration, but now that I'm thinking about it, even with a small party or even NO party I think I would still get 1 gift. Unless they wanted something ridiculously inexpensive, then MAYBE 2. Chat Icon

I still try to get my children 1 joint "big" gift (they are a month apart - they are currently 3 and 5). I feel like as time goes on though, the gifts might be dwindling Chat Icon

When my DS turned 4, we got him a 16" bike (best $$ ever spent because he uses it so much!) and when he turned 5 we got him this remote control car he wanted that was kind of pricey. We don't go THAT overboard with gifts even at Christmas, so one decent size gift feels right to us. If what DS wanted was something smaller, we would have probably gotten him a 2nd gift too.

I used to get a bunch of smaller things, but this year I bought one more expensive gift.

Usually just a big gift like dsi, bike, etc from parents. I usually buy a small gift from the siblings.

Usually one big gift, or a couple of smaller ones. We don't go crazy with gifts. Other people get them plenty of stuff.

We buy one main gift and maybe something smaller or something she can wear for her birthday party. This year, we bought her an iPOD touch and a case. I think if there's a year she doesn't want something expensive, we'd buy her more gifts, but since the things she always wants are expensive, we just buy that one thing and be done with it.

We got her a few gifts, accessories for her american girl her grandma bought her. She got enough for her bday party. I always put most of those away and give her one to play with every so often.

DS gets one or two smaller things from us plus a party at a party place. This year his party will be at the movies. From us he will get the new worlds record book and the new diary of a wimpy book that comes out next month.

DS birthday is at the very end of November. So between his birthday and then xmas he gets so much from friends and family.

I tell them that their birthday is NOT ChristmasChat Icon

I will normally get them a single gift of their choosing. Sometimes they want a party and THAT is their gift.. although I'll usually go and get something else to go with it for the actual day.
