spinoff heart rate- help for a beginner

I just started working out and will go on the ellipitical for about 20-30 min. I do approx 100 strides per min and my heart rate is usually 140-150. Then I usually go on the treadmill for another 20-30 min but just do a semi fast walk.

I am looking to lose weight. Is this productive any tips?

You target heart rate should be between 65-85% of your max heart rate (221 minus your age).

As long as you are keeping your heart rate up during your fast walk I think you're fine. If you want you can alternate speed and incline during your walk to make it harder and more intense.

Re: spinoff heart rate- help for a beginner

For 36 that would be 221-36 = 185 for your max heart rate.

So 65-85% should be 120-157

I work out higher than my the target range for my age as well. That is just how I am accustomed to it and everyone is different. If you find you can exercise at that heart rate then I think that should be fine. If you were in an anaerobic zone for too long you would know it because you wouldn't be able to last very long.

I have been focusing more on my HR as of late (see my recent post) and think, starting out, you should focus on staying in the aerobic zone. Once you get used to it and comfortable, add some heavy intervals where you bring your HR up for a few minutes, and then back to aerobic.

I try to keep my HR under 160 for the most part, but for my aerobic work, no higher than 150-152 - it's challenging, but worth it for the results!!! Chat Icon

Thanks. So does doing a slow walk (2.6 speed on the treadmill) Have any benefit? I usual use it to cool down but for 20-30 min I probably better off staying on the elliptical for a few extra mins?

Re: spinoff heart rate- help for a beginner

as the other girls said your heart rate should be anywhere from 65-85% of your max heart rate. Anything less is considered "fat burn" and not really cardio. Good luck!
