Spinoff from Bloomberg...
I am very pro breastfeeding - but I am more Mother's choice. I didn't' EBF, but they had about 6mths of BM. Anyway...here is a different spin on the issue.
I do not support Bloombergs BF initiative ideas..Taking away someones rights is not going to increase BF. But Education, allowing mothers to stay in the hospital until there milk comes in, proving assistance when mom's have to go back to work will all help mothers who choose to BF - BF longer.
My biggest issue here is that there is a huge issue missing...Bloomberg claims he is doing this b/c of childhood obesity..however, clinical evidence shows that babies on formula grow at the same rate as BF babies. There is no clinical evidence that suggests otherwise. The obesity epidemic is not b/c of breast vs. bottle its because of US, as parents. I am sure a lot of parents give their children fast food at least 1x/wk, let their children watch more than 2h of TV/day. It is not b/c of formula that obesity is increasing...its because of the choices we make for our family.
However, you would never see Bloomberg ban soda, mcdonalds, cable tv, juice companies, candy companies, frito lay or even cigarettes b/c their are way too many lobbyist out there that feed his pocket and this is AMERICA!! Land of the free...or so I thought!
This ban is almost as stupid as the Ice Cream Truck ban at the parks..seriously kids don't have money..if you don't want them to have ice cream say NO. Why must we ban everything?
Formula has a place in this world. If it wasn't for formula both my kids would have died from malnutrition. I can not pump to save my life...as soon as I went back to work, my supply suffered and I switched to formula. Working moms have it even harder when it comes to BF. We go back to work at 6 weeks....how the hell are we suppose to build a supply unless you are a super producer.
Anyway....the answer is not breast feeding..the answer is education...making healthy choices, etc. BF will not change this. I think that we need to focus on the scarier part of this ban - the lose of our freedom! Why does anyone care if I breast or bottle feed my child....its my choice. Just b/c you may claim it is better doesn't mean everyone has to do it. If that was the case then we would all be eating our 8 servings of fruits and veggies a day.
