Spinoff - Letters (recognition and writing)

When did you child know their letters by sight? When could they draw the letters?

Miki has NO desire to learn her letters AT ALL

my sitter tries, I try and she just says "I don't know" or "I don't want to play this game"

I have like a billion toys to teach letters and she has NO desire....what do I do?

Should an almost 3 year old know her letters?

DS is 2.5 and can recognize letters. I really credit Sesame Street for this Although we have a bunch of letter toys and books.

My friend swears by the Letter Factory DVD. We have it and maybe I should break it out again.

He cannot write them. He SAYS "C" as he is coloring and even tries to spell Connor, but only draws a like, not actual writing. He tells me to write "Mommy" "daddy" "Meagan" on his magnodoodle, but isn't as into trying to write himself yet.

Eddie is just shy of 2.5 and can recognize most letters, there are probably about 5 he still gets stuck on.

At that age they just usually start with their name. Recognizing it and possibly knowing those letters. DS really took off with the interest at age 3 and when he started pre-k. I taught him tracing first, then he got into that a lot so I started having him trace letters. He could recognize many letters, but it really started clicking after he was 3.

Melanie showed an interest at 4. She can read most letters and numbers 1-10, but she cannot write them yet.

Miranda was around 3 when she started, but that is not the norm.

Alex didn't start showing an interest until closer to 3.5/4.

As with everything else, like pottytraining, food, etc, I've learned the best course of action is to follow their lead. The worst thing you can do is to put any kind of pressure on them to take an interest and start learning, because, like an opposing magnet, they will rebel and repel.

My goal is to make learning and education a fun experience for them - and to do that, I just follow their interest. Once Alex started asking me to teach her to write/read, that's when I picked up some workbooks, and spent some time everyday going over the letters, and how to write them. At this point, she knows all the letters by sight, can write her name easily and is juuust starting to put letters together to form words.

we have fridge magnets.

while i cook, he tells me a word he wants to spell. I tell him the letters he needs, so he picks them out and forms the word on fridge.
I have a feeling this works because it gets annoying to do while I am cooking and cleaning. I think he senses that
so it becomes a must do activity.

He will trace letters, but is really bad at writing them. he sends me love letters...all the letter j and s...sometimes o.

Ale has been saying the ABCs pretty much correctly since about 2 and 4 months. She recognizes all the letters, but cannot write at all.

I think (besides TV ) what helped her a LOT are the foam letters that we play with in the bathtub. She loves them.

Same with numbers, up to 29. Then comes twenty-ten

ETA - she can spell her name if you ask her.

I don't know if you have this DVD, but the LeapFrog Letter Factory is amazing for this...DS2 knew all his letters before he was two because of it! They really love watching it and it makes learning fun.

at 2.5 DS knows the entire alphabet and if he skips a letter he will stop and go back to where he missed it.

he knew letters by site at about 2 years & 2 months.

he doesnt know how to write them yet.

he also can count to 15.

my DS also gets 20+ hours of therapy a week and goes to pre-school 3 days a week.

DS is 3 and has zero interest in letters- recognizing or writing. DS is pretty headstrong, if he doesn't want to do something it just doesn't get done. So I try periodically and when he tires of it, I leave it alone.

Marron could recognize all the letters and numbers before she was 2. I have to give most of the credit to Sesame Street (Elmo) and Baby Einstein DVDs. Also, whenever we would go out to eat, while we were waiting, we would practice her numbers and letters with her.

ETA: now that she's almost 4 we really have to start getting her to be able to write them, and also have to work on the lowercase letters.

MAtthew is 3 and knows all his letters, and the sounds of them. For Matthew it was all those wooden puzzles with letters on them
He has no desire to try to draw them.
Christopher can recognize all his letters too, he learned them from a driving toy that sings the letters and sounds.

A great DVD and let me tell you, I see progress when she watches it-



It makes them pronouce the letter and recognize them.

My niece watched it religiously and can identify a lot, what her name starts with, M for Mommy, D for Daddy.....etc.

Nate recognized his letters around 2.5 years old. I think much of it had to do with him being in a structured daycare/school environment. The kids feed off of each other and get excited about learning. When I tried to 'teach' new concepts I don't think he learned concepts as fast. So now we reinforce that he is learning at school. At 4.5, he can write his first and last name, knows/writes about 50-60 sight words and can read some lines in early readers books.

Jay also has no interest in learning letters. I know each child is different but we noticed that Jayden is not where Nate was at the same age. We think that maybe if he was in the same learning environment as Nate that we'd see a difference. So starting the first week in March he's going to Nate's school.

Some of the things we use at home include the Letter Factory DVD, flash cards, wall chalkboard in their room, and the FP Cool School.

Jack can spell out his name and when I point to the letters of his name he says them. He will also try to write his name out - and gets pretty close to writing the letters correctly.

He won't say any of the other letters of the alphabet if I point to them
