Spin off to back to school shopping...
My son is going into K. I notice all the kids now wear basketball shorts and sweats in the winter. The kids no longer wear cargo shorts or jeans. Is this the case? I'd hate to buy my kid clothes he isnt going to want to wear. If they do running pants and sweat pants in the winter what brands do you buy?

I think in K you are still ok to dress him that way. I think that starts a few grades later

Re: Spin off to back to school shopping...
K is still so young. My son is now going into 4th and didn't start with the basketball and sports clothes till last year. I was still able to get away with jeans and other tops till 2nd grade. Depends on their personality too. My son will only wear Nike, Under Armour, Adidas, anything Air Jordan or Curry. LOL! He likes his Jets stuff too. Him and his friends will get into stupid little fights over their players. Ugh! Most of the stuff I get for him at TJ Maxx or Marshalls carries it. Sometimes Macy's too. They have good sales. Outlets too. My younger DS is going into 2nd. He still likes Captain America and whatever his brother wears.

My son is going into 2nd. On occasion, I can get him to wear jeans or soft cargo type pants but for the most part, he only wants to wear sweat pants or running pants. Like the UA gear.

It’s a regional thing... but yes, it starts in K. A neighbor moved to cali and when her son went dressed that way to school she says no one wore those clothes there.
Not all kids dress that way (my son usually doesn’t unless he has a game)... but basketball is immensely popular in our school and everyone is wearing those and knee socks in the winter.

I assumed part of it was to make using the bathroom easier lol. In kindergarten I don't think they pay much attention to what other kids wear other than to notice a character they like. I'd let him wear whatever he prefers.

Re: Spin off to back to school shopping...
My son is entering K and as much as I would love him to wear cute jeans and cargo pants, he has given me a hard time since last year lol. So I buy him Nike and Under Armour stuff from Marshalls /TJ Maxx and the active wear line from Old Navy. He likes to be comfortable he tells me...
Typical man. Starts young I guess.

Well if it's any consolation, my DD has refused to wear jeans for years. She will only wear leggings or the jeggings that are pretty much leggings with a denim look to them. That and skirts/dresses She won't wear any pants with a button and zipper. She swears she will when we are in the store, she sees stuff she likes, we get home, she wears it once and that's it. So it's not just a boy thing! Come to think of it, I hate wearing pants with a button and zipper too, and jeans! I wear dresses only and I just ordered a pair of "dress" yoga pants for work- pull on, but they look like real pants.

Ugh, I really hope DS doesn't want to dress like that. I loath the basketball shorts when not playing basketball and knee socks with sandals look. It looks so dumb. Can't wait for this fad to pass!

I agree! I have a teenager, and he doesn't dress like that. He has always dressed more preppy than sporty. He wears sporty shorts to bed

Basketball shorts are not a good look on anyone.

I don't have a kindergartener or a boy but at that age I'd put him in whatever YOU want. He has years before he wants to start walking around looking like a hungover college kid cutting class.

I bought my kids a lot of the pull-on pants. Gap, Old Navy, and Gymboree all carry pull on cargos and jeans. My son loves them. It's easier for him to go to the bathroom and he has the flexibility to run around in them all day.

Re: Spin off to back to school shopping...
My son wears adidas or under armor track pants, cargo pants, chinos, and in kindergarten-1st grade sweat pants. I would buy a pair of jeans for the few times he needed them, but he hates jeans. Edit no one here wears shorts with socks in the winter. I saw it two years ago, but the look was not adopted here, thankfully.

My older son never wanted to wear jeans and chinos. He wears athletic pants/shorts and T-shirt’s most of the time. Since he was a toddler.
