speech and OT for a 3 yo
3.2 yo DS is in preschool. his teacher called me tonight, thinks he needs speech therapy for articulation. she also said i should get an OT eval, said somtimes he gets really absorbed in what hes doing and totally zones out, its like he doesnt hear her calling. i have no issues with this at home. hes very social and friendly. how woudl OT help with this? i mean, i dont even know whats going on also, do you think he would get speech for articulation at 3? i'm in nassau county the teacher told me to call the preschool director in the AM, to figure out what i do next, DS goes to school in nyc and i live in nassau (right on the border) and she wasnt sure who i call. does anyone know? the school has a few agencies they will work with. but do i call district? how long does the process take?

You need to call the school district where you live... It is pretty simple. I just did it and all his evaluations are done..

Re: speech and OT for a 3 yo
It took about 2-3weeks to do everything. From the initial phone call to the school to the last evaluation... The paperwork was the worst!!! I am just waiting for our meeting now..

couple more questions- the evals were done in school? also, do they just evaluate the areas you ask- speech, or PT , or OT, or do they do an overall evaluation in all areas?

Re: speech and OT for a 3 yo
My ds got speech at 2.5 years. They do not evaluate articulation until 3 years. My son doesn't need OT for now but I have been told that many kids that get OT and Speech together seem to progress faster.
They usually see you within 2 weeks and they can either come to you or you can go to them. DS was evaluated at home both times.
It's e best thing for him and he is speaking so much more and so clearly now.
If the teacher has concerns I wold check him out....if he doesn't qualify then at least you attempted.
Forgot to add. They will test him where the concern is which seems to be speech. He will also get a pyschological test which would see if they need to do further testing.

He had the social, psychological, and speech at a local pre-school and the ot eval at home. The OT came on a Saturday. You can have most evaluations done in your home.. They did OT even though I didn't really push it..

Re: speech and OT for a 3 yo
If those were my concerns, the 1st thing I would do is get his hearing tested... Kids can start qualifying for articulation at 3 and unless there is some underlying sensory processing issue OT isnt goingto help a child who gets absorbed in their work. To qualify for OT services, there needs to be some kind of significant delay in fine motor, visual motor, visual perceptual skills, really poor self care skills, muscle weakness.......
