Special Gift
My niece is turning 10. My sister FINALLY decided she is going to have family over this weekend to celebrate -- which means I need a gift. I'd like it to be something special. Any ideas? I'm a bit at a loss....

A really nice journal/diary and pen? A photobook of her from birth to now?

Re: Special Gift
I have a 10 yr old (almost 11) although I would have loved a journal at that age.. that might seem foreign to her. They live in a techy age where journaling is basically Musically & Snapchat, My Story. Maybe a starter bracelet from pandora with a charm of something she's into, for ex. an instrument she plays, beach theme, ballet slipper, birthstone.

Re: Special Gift
My 10 1/2 year old daughter would not be happy with a journal, she'd be pissed!
A necklace with her initial on it would be nice.
For her birthday this year, my sister took her into the city for the day just the two of them. They had lunch and went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. My daughter loved that. Other than that she loved getting gift cards.
EDITED: you people are overthinking my comment. She would not be thrilled with a journal is what I mean. Just like you would not be thrilled with a gift that you wouldn't use. You would still be thankful to the person but dare I say disappointed that you didn't receive something you wanted.
Being that none of you know my daughter calling her "ungrateful" is really unnecessary.

Special Gift
Thanks. Niece has had various journals over the years (she usually doodles in them etc.) so that probably wont work. Maybe I'll try for jewlery....day in the city would have been great, but I have an 18 month at home and am due in November with dc #2 so it is likely unlikely I'd be able to run around with just her and I for quite some time.

Re: Special Gift
My niece (who is 10) and I went to The Adventure Park on LI. She LOVED it. Can't wait to go back. Did better than I did. What about tickets to go there? You don't have to do it with her. If you aren't climbing, you don't pay.

Why would she be pissed if someone gave her a journal?

Not ungreatful, just not the norm these days. They use Chrome books & Ipads in school, all their textbooks are downloaded onto them. Like I said, they live in a techy world and can never remember a time WITHOUT cell phones, it's not them personally, its the world they are growing up in. They DO journal..just in a different way.
Please show me that rare, 1 in a million kid thats journaling the Old fashioned way..its just a thing of the past. Unless you count the child thats Artsy & loves to sketch.

No I get that. I get that maybe they wouldn't be thrilled with getting a journal or something they don't find useful, (even I, at 43 years old would prefer to journal on my laptop or using an online journal type thing)but to be "pissed"? That was what I was questioning. I was just wondering if there was something that would make her actually pissed to get a journal

Re: Special Gift
My daughter is 11 and likes journals. Something special...jewelry box ( a grown up one) or a necklace. Girls are also starting to get into things like wristlets and crossbody bags. She loves Vera Bradley and Michael Kors stuff.

Oh & they absolutely LOVE bedroom decor! Like stuff you can find at Target or Pottery Barn Teen. Also my daughter has been recently obsessed with seeing a Broadway show (besides the Christmas show at Radio City..we do that every year) So maybe 2 Tixx for her & her Mom since you're super preggo.

Re: Special Gift
My ten year old niece loves (old fashioned) journaling and fancy pens! I also like the jewelry idea. Stud earrings in her birthstone, or a bracelet?

Jewelry.
I don't think a journal and pens is an appropriate gift from a child's aunt. A classmate, maybe, but not an aunt.

That's uncalled for
Say you gave a kid a glove or soccer ball who is not into sports and they were unhappy. Is that kid ungrateful
Are kids not allowed to have preferences? Maybe she hates writing?

I think it was the way she worded it. "She would be pissed". I totally get kids having preferences. My DD certainly does. But to be pissed over a gift implies they feel they are owed exactly what they want all the time. Disappointed I can see. But pissed? If you gave your child a gift and they didn't like it and got pissed and angry and threw a fit wouldn't you be annoyed? I would. Maybe she just worded it wrong.
