Re: Speaking other languages

I always wanted to learn Russian.

I still understand Spanish (6 years HS) and Italian (3 years HS/3 years college).

At one point I started to dream in Italian - and when I was hurt would say "Aye!" in Spanish instead of "Ow". Both times I thought I really need to leave these countries and come home.

Languages have always been pretty easy to pick up...I teach my kids a lot of phrases.

Re: Speaking other languages

My dad is right off the boat from Italy and mom was italian-american so italian was always spoken in my house. Plus when I was younger and my great-grandmother was alive she only spoke sicilian. You kind of had no choice but to speak and understand italian in my house. I understand Spanish and can still spaeak it pretty well. We are planning to make sure our children learn how to speak italian. My father is the only one who came to America so all of my aunts, uncles, cousins are still there. I want to make sure that my future kids can someday communicate with their family.

Spanish is my native tongue and I understand Italian and Portuguese. I want to be fluent in: French, Italian, Russian (have always loved it!) and Mandarin (I know, super hard).

Re: Speaking other languages

I speak Italian, but speaking Italian and speaking dialect are 2 different things. Dialects are a language of their own. Many people feel they speak Italian, when in reality they actually speak a dialect.

Personally, I think dialects are beautiful! You get a different aspect of the culture.

French but I can read it better than I can speak it. Nobody around to talk to so I just have to read!

Re: Speaking other languages

I was an excellent Spanish student, but it has faded from disuse. I can still understand a lot, but it is very difficult for me to speak it.

I have also studied Hebrew and Yiddish, but my vocabulary is greatly lacking.

Re: Speaking other languages

I used to be very good in French. I studied it in HS and when I was a teenager I spent a lot of time in Paris with my aunt (who lives there). I think I forgot most of it by now.

My parents spoke 5 languages and I only speak English. They were afraid to teach me anything because they thought I would grow up with an accent. Chat Icon

The worst part is my DH is Israeli (like my parents) and I only speak a little Hebrew. I have been learning and I can have a basic conversation. I was actually very proud of myself because I met his grandmother who doesn't speak a word of English and I was able to talk to her.

But its so frustrating because i have to translate everything in my head... Chat Icon I promise myself that by the time my kid can talk, I will be fluent- or at least understand fluently.

Re: Speaking other languages

I speak Spanish. I can read Italian very well, but I am at a loss for speaking it. We had to be fluent in three languages for my masters, but their idea of fluency was just reading passages and basically translating themChat Icon
