Speaking of fireplaces...
I know we need to do something with ours-- although everyone said to just keep it as is for now.
It's a little weird, and it's downstairs in the family room. When we get a new TV, I think we'll either mount it or put it on this shelf-- it's very sturdy and I assume will hold a TV if mounting poses an issue.
ANYWAY-- I know I need glass doors which I will get ASAP because I feel it's a child safety issue, lit or not. I hate the wood shelf and don't really like the red brick, but perhaps it will be more charming once we have all of our stuff in here.
Any thoughts on how to make this look better??

you could paint it and make a bigger mantle! then once you put stuff on it, and some logs in the other space it would look really nice!!

I would keep the brick, plaint the mantel white to give it a crisp feel. You could get glass doors..it would definitely be more child friendly... white birch wood might look nice stacked in that little cubby hole

I don't like brick, so I would put either a natural stone facade on it, or some sort of tile.

We have a brick fireplace and we are refacing it with absolute black granite - we used honed granite from a slab around the opening and base - we took out the hearth - and then we have shiny granite around the honed till the mandle- above the mantle is sheetrocked - i believe - not done yet
i would paint the mandle white - but i think that color wood dates itself

agreed-- I am also painting that wood banister white that is just behind the fire place, so it iwll help to tie everything in.

I would definitely paint the mantel white and get glass doors. Also, you should see if your painter can fix those few "black" bricks... White wash just those couple. I am a "pick", but I hate that they are strewn in with the rest of the lighter brick color.
Also, not sure if this room is going to be your playroom, but I had to do this over my hearth...
DS kept ripping off the babyproofing strip and this was the only thing I could think of...
