Spain-Madrid or Barcelona
FH & I want to go to Europe next year; he's always wanted to go to Spain so we're leaning towards that as our trip. We'd like to go long enough to do 3 nights in Barcelona and 3 nights in Madrid; but if we can only choose 1 city (because of time and $$) I was hoping to get some suggestions as to which is the best place to go?? Also-any suggestions on whether we should book through a tour company or should i just go to my local liberty travel?
Thanks!

When I went preferred Barcelona to Madrid so I would pick there.
I think it is a matter of preference.

Without a doubt... BARCELONA!!! Even if you can do both, I'd spend only a day in Madrid.

Thanks! I've been doing research and all points are leading to Barcelona! I'm going to get in touch with a travel agent to see if we can fly into Barcelona and maybe see some other nearby cities over the course of the time we're there.

unless you are really into museums, I would say Barcelona. I loved it there.
but Madrid has fabulous museums that I would not want to miss..the Prado, the Reina Sofia and beyond. and Retiro Park is also quite lovely.
but still....Barcelona. it's fab and it's by the water. Madrid is landlocked!
ETA: it's pretty cheap on Iberia to fly between madrid and Barcelona. and also their train system is pretty good.
we took the train from Barca down the coast to Valencia, which is a city I LOOOVVVEEE.
you could also go to Mallorca and Menorca from Barcelona as well.
I've never used a travel agent to book my trips. check out iberia.com

I think it depends on your preferences and the time of year.
Barcelona is more cosmopolitan, whereas Madrid will give you a better feel for the older, more traditional Spain.
I love both cities (although Seville is my favorite with Granada being a close second), but if you are going during warmer months, you might be better in Barcelona and take a day trip to the coast -- there are some amazing beach villages throughout Catalunya and the Costa Brava.
I lived in Spain for 15 years so if you want any info feel free to FM me. We also go back frequently on business and pleasure.
