South Padre Island

Has anyone ever been to South Padre Island?

I am the maid of honor for my friend's wedding and am trying to think of a fun destination for her bachelorette party. Half the bridal party is on the east coast and half of the girls are out in LA, so we were thinking of doing something in Texas which is sort of in the middle.

We are thinking of going next June. I know SPI is a huge spring break destination, but I am wondering what it's like the rest of the year. We are looking for a relaxing beach type vacation, but also want some really fun bars or clubs. Do you think it would be a good location for us?

Also, any advice on hotels would be a big help.

I went there during spring break and it was lively but not crazy. I can imagine that when it is not spring break, it would be more laid back.

What I remember of the bars is that there were two of them that I had a great time at. But we did have to either walk a long way or take cabs to get to them.
