Sound barriers
Does anybody know what is involved in having the town put these up? We have a very busy road that runs behind our house and I can't stand the noise anymore. We just moved here in August and I'm ready to sell because of it. It really stinks because I love my house but I can't hate that I have to sleep with earplugs on the weekends (I work overnight so sleep during the day) because of the motorcycles, trucks, and car stereos. My neighbors have to feel the same way I do. Even if you're not trying to sleep, you can't even enjoy your own backyard because of the noise. I really feel like this is impacting on our quality of life and with all the taxes we pay here on LI, it shouldn't be like this. I only wish I had been more aware of the problem before we bought. I would have chosen a different house.
I'm going to look into putting up my own fence and trees, but I'm just not sure it's going to help all that much. Does anybody know how effective this would be?

Re: Sound barriers
I don't know what the process is to get your town to consider building a sound barrier, but I'd guess you would need a petition. Maybe you can contact a local government rep that is up for re-election this fall & try to get them on board. As for doing your own things, I've seen lots of landscaping shows on HGTV in california where they did dense plantings & water features to drown out noise. That stinks, I'm sorry you are having this problem!

Re: Sound barriers
I don't know the exact brand, but I have heard of a type of fence that can potential block some sound. I know a friend of mine was thinking of buying a house with the same situation and heard this type of fence was a possibility to reduce some noise.
HTH!

I just saw that news clip too. You have to contact the Suffolk Cty highway dept and keep bugging them. Its seems the only thing they will commit to at this time, as I learned on the news clip, is a noise study. Where that will lead to, who knows!
Good Luck.

Re: Sound barriers
Hello,
I totally feel your pain - my husband and I moved into a co-op and found that it was REALLY loud and were quite upset about it! Have you considered sound-proof windows? That's what we wound up doing - they are very expensive though (about $1000 per window depending on the size) but work fairly well (not perfectly, but definitely a WHOLE lot better and now we dont have to wear earplugs every night). FM me if you want more info. I can tell you the company we used. The windows obviously wont help when you're outside but definitely help when you're in.
Good luck to you!
