Sooooo...I'm quitting in June...when do I spill?

After 16 years Chat Icon Chat Icon I've decided to pack it in. This will be my last year. At the moment I am semi-actively looking for other work, because I want to finish the school year (actually, I don't, but it's the right thing to do Chat Icon ).

Anyway, preference sheets will come out soon and I don't want to spring it on my principal. One friend, who is retiring, is going to wait till the very end of the year to say anything even though the administration probably has a good idea. She cautioned me that I will be treated differently if I tell them now (I don't know if I agree re different treatment.) But I also don't want the principal to be hanging even though I will be easily replaceable given the current climate.

Thoughts? Now (or within the next several weeks), or wait till the end of the year?

As an AP who has to hire teachers, I would prefer a "heads up" so that I could hire the best teacher I could for my school.

I have been so burned this year, that I would so appreciate it! Can you tell the AP without the Prinicpal knowing? I am pretty good at keeping things under wrap!

ETA: I am 17 years in and thinking of life changes as well! What are you thinking of doing?

I'm sure you have thought it out, but I can't help but think about your pension. Getting to 20 years makes a huge difference.

I'd wait a while longer... I'd probably let them know in May.

I wouldn't say a thing until I am legally obligated to do so.

I've been teaching for almost 20 years as well. We are being attacked from ALL sides like never before. We used to be able to count on at least one side (students, parents, community, administration, etc) supporting us in any given situation on any given day, not anymore... we've been hung out to dry. And King Cuomo is leading the charge.

No one is looking out for any one of us. I say protect yourself, you and your family come first!

I am currently doing a little freelance writing and editing- it won't pay the bills but I know I will take a pay cut so freelancing will help. I also recently became a vendor on here, Resumes by Tracy, and have found that work enjoyable.

I know Chat Icon and it's definitely the one thing I keep coming back to- which in itself is a sign. Because I'm not thinking, "I'll miss the kids...I'll miss the work..." etc. I'm thinking, well, damn, I'm going to eat it on the pension. Chat Icon Right now I get up at 4:45, leave at 5:30, get home at 5, get no support at school, so it's taken a toll.

Thank you everyone, I am going to wait, just in case. I don't want to go into details because you never know who's reading, but I do feel like I've "put up and shut up" for a very long time and now I'm going to give myself a little more consideration. I appreciate the feedback.
