Someone help me: do you need a driver's lic..

...to have the title to a car under your name? My friend wants to transfer ownership of his old car to his oldest daughter, she only has a nys permit. I'm getting conflicting stories. DH says you don't need license. I don't see how..tia

I am not sure how it is in NY (the NYDMV doesn't mention any different) but in Massachusetts you don't have to have a license to own a vehicle. I didn't have my license until I was 26 but I bought a car at 23 (long story) as long as the insurance was paid and it was registered it wasn't an issue.

So can you still register it under your name if only have a permit? I think this is where the confusion is

I'm not 100% sure since she's out today, but I think you need a license to register a car under your name. I believe that's why my co-worker has 2 cars both registered to her DH. They were planning on getting her a car when she got her license anyway, and a friend was selling a car, so they bought it and registered it to his name until she got her license. Now this is what she TOLD me, but she very well could've been mistaken.

The title can be put into anyone's name. The registration needs to be put into someone's name who has a valid drivers license.

She would be able to register it, but she would need insurance first. The only insurance carrier I know that will insure a car to a person with a permit is Progressive

That isn't true. New York state has an assigned risk program that will insure a driver with a permit. They are put into a pool and assigned a company. You can get Allstate, or GEICO, or Progressive, but it is not the same as a regular policy with them. it is an assigned risk policy. It will cost an arm and a leg for any permitted driver to get insurance, just an FYI

Oh yeah I forgot about the assigned risk. I never write through them thats prob why lol
I actually insured someone with a permit through Progressive for a liab only policy, it was an older car, and the premium wasn't that bad. A lot lower than you would expect...

I didn't know Allstate wrote a policy when the driver only had a permit? They are usually pretty strict with drivers...

I always thought that with assigned risk you could be assigned any company that is rated to write policies in NYS. We used to have a whole booklet of AR companies addresses and phone numbers.

Yeah but you have to write directly through the assigned risk and then you are assigned a company. Progressive will write it without going through the assigned risk.
