Some bad news - need BTDT advice

I had a follow-up and post-coital with the other doctor in my RE's practice. The post-coital and the ultrasound showed that I'm ovulating today or tomorrow. But, the postcoital also showed that my CM is too thick. Also, the MRI of that cyst on my ovary showed it's likely endometrial. The doctor didn't seem too concerned just yet because I don't have any other signs or symptoms of endometriosis.

So, she sat me down and explained everything, and said while some women can still get pregnant with thick mucous, I'm not, and there seems to be no other explanation for why I'm not pregnant, so the next recommended step is IUI with Clomid for next cycle. She said she wants to do three cycles, and if I'm still not pregnant, she'll do a laparscopy to rule out endometriosis.

I asked about the thyroid levels (mine was 5.95) and she said it's really not that much of a concern because it isn't that elevated. It would only be a concern if I were pregnant, and then they would have to track it.

I'm really devasted. I truly didn't think this would come to IUI, and I'm just not so comfortable jumping right into it so quickly.

What do you BTDT ladies think? Does it make sense to jump into IUI before ruling out the endometriosis? What about natural remedies for a few months (i.e. primrose oil and robitussin)?

I told DH and he thinks it's ridiculous, that she's jumping the gun, and he wants me to see another RE to confirm or deny Chat Icon

IUI isn't all that bad as it's just bypassing the mucus and putting the sperm directly into the uterus.

If you are ovulating on your own and not having any trouble doing so, why the Clomid? I would much rather do an unmedicated IUI than a medicated one. The Clomid will actually cause your CM to dry up.

hey Beth. First I would get yourself some pre seed if you want to try naturally for a couple more months. Like you said robitussin or mucinex and I'll do a search for you for more natural stuff. You may want to buy The Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis as she has lots of natural cures, chinese medicine and general info. Secondly I beg to differ with your Dr and say that your thyroid is way too high for pregnancy. The new rule is between 1-2 for TTC and pregnancy.

PDF of Thyroid

Levels-they say 2.99 but I have heard the new standard is under 2

Now don't get me wrong once you get this under control you will be FINE but your levels are not good now. It doesn't mean your Dr is bad but this is not really the OB's teritory. I would see an endocrinologist and tell them you are TTC

My charts and bloodwork shows I'm clearly ovulating so there's no issue with that. Do the RE's usually move straight into IUI? Aren't there other non-invasive treatments for hostile CM?

Hmmm..that I don't know. I've been on Clomid for 5 months now and I have no CM at all.

Re: Some bad news - need BTDT advice

I agree with Melijane....your TSH is elevated and will create problems...I would seek a new RE....

My SIL was just diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, her TSH was around yours 6 something....it should be under 3.....she just her an ectopic pregnancy and lost her left tube to an emergency surgery..(she had a pregnancy 18 months ago and delivered a healthy girl-before she had TSH problems) .the doctors think that her ectopic was the cause of her elevated TSH.(but of course it could happen to anyone)...they also told her she is a greater risk of having a miscarriage too if TSH is not controlled....

I would def get your TSH under control first before you TTC and before it is too late....she takes a pill everyday now and is back to normal....TSH of almost 6 is def not normal.....

GL to you

Re: Some bad news - need BTDT advice

Thanks ladies.

I made an appointment with my regular ob/gyn. I don't have a good instinct about the RE - at least, the other woman I saw today, so I'm going back to him and getting a referral to someone else. I don't want to waste anymore time with someone who is too easy to jump the gun, and isn't even aware of the new TSH guidelines.

I just printed out all the articles from the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and I'm going to go back to my RE one more time and discuss with her. If nothing else, maybe I can enlighten her Chat Icon

Re: Some bad news - need BTDT advice

One more thing - should I just go ahead and make an appointment with an Endo? I have a PPO so I don't need a referral, but I have no clue where to go. I know in my area, University of Penn Hospital has a good reputation - should I just cold call and make an appointment?

Hi, I agree with Melissa also! There are def. some "tricks" you can try to thin out your CM but as far as your thyroid level goes - it def. could be lower. I would see an endo (and explain you're TTC b/c I know when I called around to get one it was a real PITA - they respond a little better if they understand this). It's higher than ideal - but can easily be lowered with a regular dose of synthroid (which you'll probably need once you get pg too)

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Im very sorry...

I also think that TSH is VERY high for someone TTC. I was put on Medicatyion with a 5.4 TSH and it was considered a "part " of my IF.

Liek I think melijane posted, for TTC, the new guidlines for TSH is 2.5 or below....

Many drs dont follow this....If it were me, I would want it lowered.

Anything over 5 is considered semi "high" these days.

I myself get symptoms of hypothyroid( sleeppiness, puffy face, dry skin and hands, losing hair) when my TSH is over 3.....

Re: Some bad news - need BTDT advice

IMO, IUI isnt bad at all. All it is is helping the 'boys' get to where they need to be so that they dont have to swim there themselves.

It's so NOT invasive at all. You lay on the table and they insert DHs sample...and your done. Thats it. They tell you to go home and have sex too...I think that is to help make you feel better if/when the IUI DOES work...you wont fully know if it was the IUI or the babydancing that took.

I'm sorry your facing IF issues too, its a long hard road.

When DH and I start TTC again we will give it 2 mos on our own and then go right back to the RE for IUI. Im not going to wait like I did last time...IUI was a blessing for us.
