Solids newbies...How is your DC telling you they are done ?

I swear my DD would eat and eat till she popped if I let her Chat Icon

I'm not a "measurer". I kind of pour a little cereal in a bowl and mix, whatever she eats, she eats...She gets fruit now too..

The whole time, she Mmmm's Mmmm's
(noisy eater) from the beginning until I think, she's had enough...She never turns away like my son did when he was done and she will keep opening her mouth...She gets a lot..And she is a big baby ...

What cues do your DC's give you when they are done ?

I have the same issue- big baby, ravenous appetite. Unlike my first who ate a like a bird, I DO premeasure Eliza's food because she'll eat til she bursts. By premeasuring, when it's all gone, she's done. I'll nurse her if she seems like she wants more.

Remember- at this age we are not feeding to fill them up- we are feeding them to get them used to eating. The solids are really just practice.

Until the age of 1 a baby's sole source of nutrition should be breastmilk or formula.

Yeah, I think with her I will need to start measuring or at least measure once ot twice to get a feel for what it looks like in the bowl Chat Icon

Problem is, my DD likes to"practice" too much...She actually enjoys spoon feeding I guess...And she likes her formula too , but she is still only taking 4 oz bottles, but yet every 3 hours still Chat Icon

Re: Solids newbies...How is your DC telling you they are done ?

I'm a January mommy. Shaylie has been eating rice cereal for about 2 weeks now. I started giving her 1 table spoon once a day, but then she wanted more so I gave her another tablespoon. After that, she usually starts fussing in her highchair that she wants out so that's how I know that she's done. Once I take her out and she's still fussing, then I'll give her 4 oz of formula.

DD's 4 month appointment is Thursday!!!!

I know Sadie and your DD are around the same age and size. I cant believe she is only taking 4oz at a time. Have you tried upping it to get her to go longer?

sadie is drinking 2 8oz (am and pm) and 2 6oz during the day. Sometimes she takes an additional 6oz depending on what time she eats/sleeps during the day.

Re: Solids newbies...How is your DC telling you they are done ?

When I first started Shaylie with cereal, after she would eat it, I gave her 6 oz and she was fine. Then she was having diarrhea problems due to her teething so for 24 hrs I had to give her straight Pedialyte then after that give her formula mixed with Pedialyte for another 24 hrs. When I got her back on the full strength formula, I was giving her 8 oz, but she would drink half of it. I would wait and give her the rest. Also, she plays around with the nipple a lot or she tries and gets her thumb in her mouth at the same time with the nipple. She'll start talking when the bottle is in her mouth and the newest thing is she's actually blowing air into the bottle and creating bubbles. When she starts that, then I just take the bottle away and wait for when she wants it. Shaylie got weighed last Friday and she's 13 lbs.

Me three-with Declan-I used to feed them at the same time-one in the bouncy and one in the highchair and alternate spoonfuls. But nwo D cries Big FAT tears if he has to wait a second for his food. I measure out the cereal 1.5 TBL each and either mix half a jar from 2 jars or do one whole jar of fruit or veg. My Dr told me they can have up to 4TBL at a sitting but that seemed crazy to me

Ronan will just close hi mouth or let it dribble out which he also thinks is fantastic fun! I always feed them bottles first and then do food about 1 hr later. Right now they are getting two meals a day. Cereal with fruit around 10-11AM and then veggie sometimes with cereal sometimes alone around 3 ish

See sometimes, I'll have to top her off with another 2oz...Other times she won't even completely finish the 4oz....So to avoid too much waste, we still have her on 4....

Don't forget though, Lexi still isnt sleeping through the night ( although last night she fell asleep at 6:15pm, woke up at 8:30-10pm just hanging out and then slept till 5am ate and went back till 7am Chat Icon ) So she normally gets another 2 bottles in the middle of the night and also likes to eat every 3 hours...I think thats where she makes up her ounces and being she's still in the 95% for weight, I assume shes getting enough, she likes to space it out though I guess Chat Icon

My DS was on 8oz long before now ! Amazing how different they all are, even siblings !

Well I measured out 2 tbls. this morning and when I put it in the bowl, thats just about exactly what I was giving her, along with a half container of fruit, 2x a day....She would easily take more, but I think we will stick with this for now to make sure her belly is getting used to it , then I guess I will increase it, my little piggy Chat Icon

Thanks for all the responses ladies!Chat Icon
