Steve wanted to get it for Damien but I said no. I would rather he run around outside than sit on one of those things. I said I would rather get him the leapfrog my first computer.

oh please, DH isn't passionate about much in life at all, but this...he seriously flipped when we saw it in the store.
He is an avid bike rider. He thinks this is to replace kids riding their bikes outside...he says parents are too cautious to let them ride up and down the sidewalk and too lazy to get out of their house to ride with them.

When I saw it, I thought just like Leo does.
With that said...my DS is too young now, but I would never and will never get him that or anything like it. He will go outside and ride his bike while I sit on the stoop and watch him, just like my mom did with us and just like all our neighbors do with their children.

Looks like its for older kids, I don't think Julia would get much use out of it right now, plus I'd rather her ride a bike outside--lol

I think it's great for some kids who need to burn off extra energy - especially on cold/rainy/snowy days -- or maybe kids who need a little more motivation to exersize.
but we don't have room for it, so ds will just have to continue doing his laps in the house - that way mommy gets a workout too!

see, I thought just the opposite. If you are goign to be sitting in front of the TV playing video games, then at least you can get some exercise while you are doing it. I think its a great idea to combat today's obesity in youth.
If you cant beat em, join em. Lots of kids who would never have exercised otherwise, will because of this.

See, this is a GREAT point and I think you're right! Some kids don't get "normal, everyday" exercise from running around and riding their bikes like we did when we were younger.
Unfortunately, lots of parents don't have the time, energy or just plain don't "feel like" sitting outside with their children. And then the children suffer.

Re: So what do you think of the Smart Cycle?
My ds will be getting it for Christmas. I thought it was cute and it looked like it had alot of learning activities on the games (like numbers & letters). My ds will be 3 in April and I think he will have a blast on it, but that doesn't mean I'm only going to let him on that and less outside. My ds has way to much energy to only play with one thing all day but I thought it would be nice when it's rainy, or if winter ever comes (too cold out).

Re: So what do you think of the Smart Cycle?
We have one for DS that we'll be giving him for Christmas.
Winter is fast approaching, and DS's quality outdoor playing time is going to be ending soon. DW also has to watch DD, so it's really hard for her to keep an eye on her, and DS on a "real" bike. DS is stubborn, and he won't cooperate with pedaling a real bike but he likes to pedal our exercise bike in the living room....
This is definitely not a replacement for playing outdoors, but it's a much better alternative to playing with computer games without pedaling. Plus, it might give us more incentive to ride the exercise bike while he's on his bike...

I totally agree. DS has energy to burn and on days where it is too cold to go outside, I see this as a perfect way to burn it! Grandma bought it for him for Christmas.

Re: So what do you think of the Smart Cycle?
We already bought it for Andrew (he's 3.5) and not so much for Lauren (18 months) - I think she's too young for it. Anyway, I got it back in early October from Kohls on sale and with free shipping, paid less than $65 for it, that's why I jumped on the sale.

i feel the same. as a teacher, i used to ask my class every monday "so, what did you do this weekend?" 80% of the time the answer i got was "watch tv, watch a movie, or play video games". i think for kids whose parents can't or don't take their kids outside (especially kids in not so safe areas) and kids who need to have more physical activity this is a fabulous toy. it's also a great way to burn off extra energy when the weather is bad.
personally, my ds is not going to have tv for a few years and later on he will have to earn some educational video game time but this would be the type of video game i would get him.
