so since STAR is such a hot topic today
Why don't they just take this reduction off taxes permanently - you know lower the school taxes? Why do they make it something you have to apply for? It seems stupid to me. I guess they want to take advantage of the people who don't know about it

Maybe not so much for other areas of NY state, but summer houses and any home that is rented, or is lived in half time do not qualify and we all know there are TON of these type of places around the Island, so it's only for those who live full time in residence in the house who qualify.

really? didn't know that. SO, they still could just automatically deduct from the permanant residences.

But not everyone who buys a home is using it for permanent residency.
For instance - the owner of my home couldn't claim STAR he said b/c he didn't live there and the house was vacant while they remodelled, so he had to pay the full tax price. He has STAR on his own home that he lives in with his family.
There are so many exceptions to every rule, and it's better to make it the homeowner's responsibility.

i understand. that is why i stated the town should determine the permanent residency homes and automatically apply the star to those. i guess perhaps it could get confusing and many people could easily beat the system.

Re: so since STAR is such a hot topic today
because the state saves tons of money because LOTS of people don't apply. look at how many new homebuyers around here found out the sellers didn't have star.

Re: so since STAR is such a hot topic today
What I find to be WORST...is how Senior Citzens have to apply EVERY year for a "low income excemption".
With this form my Grandma does not pay school tax and her town/city tax is cut considerably.
This past year was the first in MANY years that she didn't do it (Ok, it was my Brother responsibility to help her with this )
Anyway...even after BEGGING the town assessor and others at the town hall they said...there was nothing they could do. So a woman who makes $9k a year...had to pay an extra $1k in taxes this year...

But permanent homes are sometimes used as summer time residencies, or in my instance, a normal house in a neighborhood that was "flipped" to imporve its condition for resale.
And as other posters stated - there are so many people who don't apply for STAR b/c they don't want to/forget to/don't know.

A lot of people don't apply, don't know about it, or forget to do it. So the state still makes money.
I agree though, if you are entitled, it would be more efficient to just reduce taxes. The state is payiing salaries for people to review these applications!

Re: so since STAR is such a hot topic today
I've owned a home for 6 years - and this will be my first year applying. They've saved money on me!
Plus, we own two investment homes - - can't do Star on them either.
