Re: So Ryan

we have the same problem, so we started very soft foods, like cheeses, yogurts, cottage cheese, grilled cheese made with lots of butter, I also buy the pre-cooked whole chickens from the supermarket, they tend to be very tender and i kind of take little pieces and mash it between my gingers before I give it to my little guy. I also do pancakes, over cooked pasta, chopped meat (it crumbles into little pieces perfectly), rice krispies, toast, egg yolks. Good luck, small, very tender pieces is key. Enjoy RY!!!Chat Icon

Re: So Ryan

Here is my problem....

I give him a little pancake lets say.... the texture makes him cough/choke and gag...

He's fine and all... but I totally freak out, and take everything away...

DH gets so mad... because he thinks he's never gonna get use to different textures since I always do this...

Its just when it happens... its so hard to tell if he is really choking...

The other day he did this, I immediately ripped him outta the highchair... screaming "he's choking, he's choking" had him upside down patting his back.... Meanwhile... he wasnt even chokin anymore.... I got myself so worked up, and hysterical I didnt even realize he was FINE...

He may be ready... but Im not Chat Icon

It doesn't sound like he is able to maneuver his tongue to roll the food to the cente rof his mouth and keep it there. Maybe you should just hold off marissa, no need ot get yourself so anxious, stick with yogurt and foods like that and wait a month or 2, he is kind of young to be on table food, we usually don't start that until 9 or 10 months.

Re: So Ryan

Maybe he is just sick of the flavors of baby food. Try some different ones.

My DD had the same issues. She used to gag on baby food but was not ready for table food. I found if I made it warmer she would eat it.

Re: So Ryan

Try pureeing/finely chop food that you eat. Maybe stick to veggies/fruit - sweet potatos, mashed potatos, green beans, peas, apples, pears, bananas, etc...

I agree with emlain that he may be too young for table food which is why he is gagging.

Have you talked your ped?

Re: So Ryan

I would also recommend pureeing whatever you eat. We've been doing that with the food mill we bought (It was $12.95 at onestepahead.com) and Emily really likes the fresh food over her jarred food. I think she is just getting bored of the jar food. It's been nearly 4 months on the same thing, you know?

Joseph was a gagger too. I still think it was because I started him on table food to late. I did the same thing as emilain suggested. If you give him small enough pieces, than you know he is NOT choking, just gagging.
