so re-teach me about newborns

its been 5.5 years since i had a newborn and all of a sudden i feel like i know nothing. this baby is coming in 5 weeks! i know i had Ian on a schedule pretty early but is it still...change, feed, play, sleep, repeat every 3 hours? does tummy time still start immediately?

Tummy time immediately, I BF so everything was on demand for a good long while, and he got himself on a pretty good schedule early on. He didn't like tummy time at first, so we would do it in short increments, but then he started rolling over at like 3 & 1/2 /4 weeks and holding his head up really well. Now, he actually prefers tummy time, especially if he's on the boppy, he can watch everything. We went for walks every day it wasn't raining (which was great for me). We tried to wake him every 45-1hour as the ped had recommended at about 1 week (he was in NICU for 5 days). So excited for you!

It's only been 21 months for me and I've already forgotten.Chat Icon I'm pretty sure I did something like that. Things are about to get crazy in this house in 2 weeks with a newborn and a crazy toddler.

Sounds like a good plan. We did pretty much that for a while until dd decided she was over it and threw the whole routine out the window at 3 months. We're slowly getting back into it after a crazy 2 weeks of chaos. The first few weeks were more like sleep eat sleep eat repeat. Once she woke up more we got into the eat play sleep routine but I follow her cues as far as the timing. It could be 2 hours or it could be 4 hours depending on how long she naps or plays.

Re: so re-teach me about newborns

I BF so DS was fed on demand, but we still tried to follow the "EASY" schedule. Eat, activity, sleep, your time.

We started tummy time during the first month.

I thought I'd be able to do the EASY but with my DD it was more like SCFED

Scream, Cry Fuss,Eat, Doze (for 20 min)
Repeat.
Day and night.

Oh and There was no Y- YOUR TIME.
My Time was spent curled in ball crying from lack of sleep and pure frustration and swearing I'd never have another!

Yeah. Good old colicy newborn!

This was more or less both my kids. They never were into the idea of following any type of routine until around a year old. I don't know where these routine following babies come from!

eta- My kids weren't colicy but BF on demand and had no zero interested in following any routine I tried to set, or napping regularly or STTN. Chat Icon

DS is 4 months next Saturday and once I started putting him into his crib still awake but drowsy (about 3 weeks ago) and putting him down to bed earlier in the evening, he's been STTN like a champ! Goes down around 8:30/9ish, wakes up between 5 & 7, depending on the morning... like this morning I had to wake him at 7:15, but earlier this week he woke at 4:30 to eat and fell right back to sleep until 7:30.

ETA: DH and I are really soaking up this time, as we know it very well might not last, especially once he REALLY starts teething (he's starting already, but not teeth breaking through yet).

Note that I wrote "tried" DS was more or less attached to my boob for my entire maternity leave. All he did was eat...people would comment on it all the time. Fun times!
